What my car accident revealed

Two weeks ago, I was in a car accident where another car t-boned me.  I was given a CT scan to check for a c-spine injury.  Although my spine is completely fine, they found a "mass" on my thyroid, and I was told to follow up with an ultrasound.  After doing the ultrasound, they found a total of three solid "masses" on my thyroid.  I will now be going to see an Internal Medicine doctor on Thursday for a consult.  I am very worried and nervous about what is happening right now.

Does anyone know of anywhere I can find out more information about what is going on with my thyroid or any advice as to what I should expect from this?

I met with an internal medicine doctor today and he scheduled a fine needle biopsy and also took blood for some tests.  He said two of the nodules are over 1 cm and one is slightly smaller than a cm.  He said my thyroid is moderately enlarged and that it's "marbled."  He told me I have Hashimoto's disease and my blood tests would reveal if I need to be put on a medication for Hypothyroidism.

Thank you all for your help!!

Moostera gave you helpful info on the above post. There are alot of people who have Thyroid (Masses) Goiter and do not know it, and at times will find out when they are being treated for something totally different, as in your case. In my case, I had a goiter w/ nodules and because my nodules contained abnormal cells, I was urged to have a Total Thyroidectomy (Thyroid Removal) and I did. Your case may be totally different. The most important things for you to do is to #1, NOT leave it alone and find a Endocrinologist or a Thyroid Specialist. They will do a scan to determine the type of Goiter and then a Fine Needle Biopsy of the Nodule's to determine the type of cells within them. You will be fine..God Bless You.

Hi MommaMiddy

I did a bit of googling, and I hope this helps a little....

From: http://www.hsc.virginia.edu/internet/surgery/tutorialneckmass.cfm
"The majority of thyroid masses are benign. However, a complete workup should be done to evaluate a thyroid mass. The workup of such a thyroid mass usually entails an office visit where laboratory tests, including thyroid function tests are drawn. If these thyroid function tests determine that the mass is causing a state of over-activity of the thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) then the physician may proceed with a radioactive thyroid scan. The scan will help to determine if the mass in the thyroid is producing an excess amount of thyroid hormone. The primary treatment of an over-functioning thyroid mass or nodule is medical. The physician may place the patient on thyroid suppression medication followed by thyroid scan six months later. These over-functioning nodules are often called autonomous nodules or "hot" nodules. They rarely require surgery."

I was only diagnosed last week and they found a nodule ... I think nodules are called masses too, but obviously they come in all shapes and sizes and do different things. Blsdnsvd is right, you need to see an Endocronologist. What you might be able to expect on thursday are blood tests, and maybe a nuclear scan? I don't know how things work over there but they will want to check those things out.

Hang in there!!

Basically, what they told me is that my thyroid is enlarged with a solid mass on each lobe and one on the inside of the thyroid.  I've started trying to research information, but I'm so lost...I guess I need to know more to know anything...

A Thyroid Mass is more than likely a "Goiter" with nodules. This is very common, however you must see a "endocrinologist" so that he/she can evaluate your case and go through the appropriate steps to determine your situation.

Hi MommaMiddy

I'm far, far from being an expert, but am wondering if they said anything more about the "mass"? Do you have a copy of the report? I don't understand a lot about masses etc, but some people here are bound to know something.

No wonder you are worried and nervous ~ it makes things worse when you don't know what is going on with your body, and Thursday can seem so far away when you're in this situation. I wish you all the best, and hope you'll check back in if you want to talk about it.
