What thyroid disorder do I have?

I have been diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid diease, but I have been told that it is not Hashimotos. My thyroid is minimally enlarged, in the ultrasound and scintography it can be seen that there is an infection process, but there are no signs of autonomy. My TSH is 5.5, FT4 is 1.0, FT 3.3, TPO-AK is 59, TSH Receptor Antibodies are also negative. I have been advised to take hormones and that I am allowed to take iodine. I feel confused as the only advice I can find for automimmune hyppothyroidism is with regards Hashimotos, for which it is advised tooid iodine. Please could you perhaps enlighten me as to what my diagnosis may be? I have been told that I will probably have this for the rest of my life.

i have done some reading and there are a few rare autoimmune diseases that are simialr to hashimotos. unfortunatly i do not remember the names, you might want to go to the library and get some books on hypothyroidism, it may help you understand.

Yes - that would be my guess is to get your labs and run for a second opinion.

He is correct - all autoimmune thyroid conditions are not Hashimoto - the other is Graves and both can be determined by labs and uptake scans.

He sounds like he is making this more difficult than it has to be.  Since he "did" Dx you with something thyroid related - did he medicate you?

Dear Stella 5349,
That is the irritating thing, the diagnosing doctor didn't give me a diagnosis. On asking if it was hashimotos, he said no it wasn't and said that not every automimmune thyroid disease is hashimotos. He was not a helpful man. I think perhaps I should go for a second opinion.

There is only one autoimmune disease in regards to hypothyroidism and that is Hashimoto. Your TPO blood work up IS the test for Hashi's

What autoimmune thyroid condition did your doctor say you had ??
