When do you take your med?

I receive author Mary Shomon's newletters all about thyroid issues and the most recent one discusses when the best time to take our meds is. I take mine in the morning with water and wait an hour before having anything else to eat or drink. This research suggests it might be better to take the med at night before going to bed. When do you take yours?

I take my Tirosent first thing with water and then a cup of coffee. One hour later I take my Cytomel and eat breakfast.

That was an interesting article. I go to the endo next week and I'm gonna see what he says.

oh good. I don't have an appt. for a couple months so I looked on my Levoxyl bottle and it simply says "take one tablet daily" and specifies to take an hour before eating or 2-3 hours after eating so I am going ahead and trying it at night...somehow it makes sense to me since I also have so many symptoms of Hashimoto's disease during the night...but I should alert my endo. too. GOOD LUCK! THANKS FOR SHARING. HUGS

Just to clairify for all readers: Only T4 can possibly be taken at night. Some report good results. Technically it shouldn't matter as T4 is the storage hormone and instant energy should not occur after ingesting.

For those that also take a T3 med, in synthetic or natural pig thyroid for, it is not advised to take at night, unless you work night shift, you wont sleep from the 'instant energy' T3 supplementation provides. Nothing gained.

I take mine in the morning at 8am like most with a glass of water and then I go back to sleep for a little. Sometimes though It seems like after I take it I get that buzzing feeling inside for about an hour and then it subsides. This doesnt happen all the time. Then there are time I take it and it seems like I just get sleepy and go right to sleep. What could the reason be I wonder? Taking it at night is a thought though. I may check out what all is said about taking it at night. Thanks

I take mine first thing in the morning (7am). I tried it at night at one stage but for me morning is more convienient as I already take 5 other tablets in the evening, all of which cant be taken with the T4 med.

I'd go nuts if I had to wait an hour with no food or tea or coffee in the morning. That's cruel and unusual punishment in my book!

I figured the requirements are:

Empty stomach, at least 3-4 hours fasting
Full glass of water, and
One full hour after taking the pill before eating anything.

Best fit for me is at 4:30 PM or so. I ear early lunch, so I'm fasting by then. Water, no problem. And supper is over an hour away. Works for me.

I also use vitamin C with it, Mary's site published a study on how it seems to help absorption. Vitamin C helps for absorption on a lot of things.

Yes, I get Mary's newsletters too, and read that article.
Personally for me if I took my T4 med at night, I wouldn't be able to sleep! I obviously get a rush of it around an hour after taking it, coz I get the shakes real bad.
I also like a glass of wine in the evening too, so that would also affect it.

I am glad it works for some people!

Have a great day!

Everyone is different in how they react to what they take or when they take it.

I take mine at 5am every morning. (Use alarm clock) I have my pill & bottle of water on my night table. I have never had any issues with energy or weight.

I think as long as you take it at the same time all the time it does not matter when you take it, just be consistent.

Good point, Totie. I am still pleased with taking my pill before bed. Any other people want to share when they take their pill and how that is working?

the last two nights i took the pill two hours after meal instead of right before bed...the thing i didn't like about taking it right before bed was the glass of water sitting in my stomach and waking up to go to the bathroom....always making adjustments...hey, I still prefer taking it later than first thing in the morning. Whatever works, right?

I have problems forgetting to take meds in the morning so I want to know how it worked with you taking your Thyroid meds at night? Are you still doing it?

We haven't heard from hashi53 in a while.  Here is a link about taking meds at night.  I think the bottom line is that it is fine as long as you don't have any problems sleeping. It is worth a try to see which feels best for you.

Well.....  I dont really understand any of this crap anymore.  I take my first dose of thryoid at 3 am.  I fall back to sleep like a baby.  It puts me in a trance.  IM taking NTH and my first dose is 3  1/4 grain pills.  One thing that is nice about the morning dose is that the medication still makes me feel horrid, ear ringing, confused etc but i sleep right through it.  I think my body need the t3 to sleep.

Also i cant take any other thryoid, and can barely take the NTH but i keep pushing forward thinking something will change.  But it doesnt.

What can I say...........for many, T3 is almost like coffee, only a calmer awareness. Trance feeling is obviously not normal. Why you have a different experience to the thyroid meds you have tried is mysterious as you know. Hopefully you will find out the answers sooner than later.

I would say that maybe you still are not on enough, but in the past increasing seemed difficult for you. Many feel lousy when increasing thyroid med, not nearly how you describe it though. Time........

So you take quantity 3 one grain tablets daily..?

Might as well try taking the dose different ways / times. Do you spread out the dose three times a day? Might try that instead of onece or twice daily.

LazyMoose, that isn't the case for everyone.

I take my full dose of NDT (which contains T4 and T3) either right before climbing into bed, or at 4 AM, and then I go back to sleep.

Both work beautifully for me and help me sleep better than I've been sleeping in years.
