Ablation is radiation of the rest of the thyroid to kill off the remaining tissue so that if there are any microcarcinomas that are in the leftover tissue, we can kill it and the cancer will not spread. I did not have a nodule that they could drain, they were all solid. Cystic nodules can be drained, they are fluid. Fluid nodules are not cancerous. Cancer is solid, or solid/mixed, I had both of these. Also solid nodules can be vascular, meaning they have a blood supply. All mine had blood flow in the nodule. But the nodules were ll benign, my thyroid tissue held the cancer. Radioactive Iodine ablation is a process where I swallow RAI 131 and that is sucked up by only the thyroid tissue left, which should kill it preventing a recurrence of my cancer.
Hi, I had a total thyroidectomy a month ago and have not had any weight gain from that. I am on Synthroid.
I started working out again 2.5 weeks after surgery and eat my normal healthy diet. I know weight gain is an issue with some people but I also think people really need to pay attention to what they eat.

Hi and thanks for replying. Did you have a nodule that kept coming back after draining? I am new to all this (not sure of all the lingo) so you have to explain what some of this stuff is. Ablation?
I did not gain much in the six weeks since I had my lobectomy, but there is about a 20 % chance that your thyroid will not function after a lobectomy, they can always supplement your thyroid hormone if you are low. I have since had a TT, and am gaining weight while awaiting ablation... =(
