Has the endo you will be going to, requested any blood work prior to your visit? If so, would be nice to know what he might have ordered; if not, might be a good idea to call and ask about it, since having labs prior to your visit will save time, when you get there, so if you need medication, he can prescribe it then, rather than waiting for blood work.
I second goolarra -- what, if any, hypo symptoms do you have?
Since you only have TSH, what was that?
I'd like to know what hypothyroid symptoms you might have, too.
Ahh well i'm a bit tired so let me add the causes of low uptake. :)
Decreased iodine uptake can be seen with hypothyroidism, all types of thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland), excessive iodine, Amiodarone (drug), too much thyroid medication.
low TSH and high/normal T4 combined with low RAI uptake sound like thyroid inflammation; it damages the thyroid tissue, so hormones are leaking into the blood stream causing high T4 and very low TSH. High ESR reading indicates thyroiditis of viral origin, while high TPO antibodies may point to Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
I have only had the TSH blood work and the uptake scan. I am not on any medication for this, as I am waiting to see the endochronologist.
As I understand it from when I was hyper, low uptake can indicate thyroiditis.
Have you had any thyroid tests besides TSH and the uptake and scan? If so, please post results and reference ranges.
What symptoms do you have that may be hypothyroid related?
Have you ever been tested for Thyroid Peroxidase and Thyroglobulin antibodies? The tests are TPO ab and TG ab. They are used mainly to diagnose for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
If you are on thyroid replacement medication, TSH can be supressed with no signs of hyperthyroidism. If you are not on medication, TSH can be low with no signs of hyperthyroidism/normal RAIU uptake due to secondary/central hypothyroidism, non-thyroidal illness, subclinical hyperthyroidism (RAIU may be normal; may have no symptoms), drugs that inhibit TSH, pregnancy (first trimester).
