getting pregnant while hyperthyroid

Classically I never could decide if I wanted kids before. Now I find out I am hyperthyroid and I don't want to take the radiation pill. So does that mean I can't have a healthy baby? I can't take a chance on having a sick one and I don't think I can do the radiation pill. So no kids for me? What do you guys think? Is there another way?

hello everyone

my girlfriend is a bit worried at the moment as she thinks she might be pregnant she has been on the pill constant but she missed 2 nights which were the same days we had sex she has just missed her period which is now 8 days late but she is also on medication for thyroid problems,

so my question is is she lickely to be pregnant, and if my knowledge tells me that thyroid problem can cause period fluxuations?

is there anyway we can find out before she see's the doc

also she had only just finished her last period by a couple days before we had sex when she missed her pill?

I was hyperthryoid and after I had my son I decided about 3 years later to do RAI.  I figured I have a child if there is a fertility problem I atleast have him.  Well sure enough I wasn't even trying and almost a year after RAI I got pregnant and what a blessing!  I felt great and she was a bundle of joy and healthy...she is 8 now and likes to test the waters, but worth every minute of it.  You should be just fine if you do RAI, but I would do all your homework.  I really didn't look into to fertility issues, I was happy either way!  Best of luck to you!

Hi, I have hyperthyroidism and I my doctor is wanting me to do RAI. I know it sounds scary, but I have read where a lot of people who have had it said it is not that bad. I had rather go on and have RAI done instead of being hyper. Hypo is better than being hypo. I am not saying that hypo is a walk in the park, but it is easier to treat than hyper. They say after 6mths to a year you can try and conceive. Talk to your doctor and see what he has to say and go by his advice. I know of people who were pregnant during hypo and have healthy babies. I would not try to conceive while hyper though.  Who knows your levels may be perfect after RAI and you will not have to worry about hypothyroidism!

Oh and also, if you opt not to have RAI or do not want to be on antithyroid drugs for a long time, they may choose to just take it out depending on how bad your hyperthyroidism is. Women who want to get pregnant soon opt for this instead of RAI or antithyroid medications. This is what I have read up on and hopefully someone with a lot more knowledge than me can help you even more. Don't give up  hope of having a baby, it will work out in time! Good Luck!

I would talk to an OB about that.  Maybe you could wait a significant amount of time before you tried to get pregnant.   I do think you should get your thyroid straightened out first, because it is linked to fertility. Definitely do your research.  Good luck.
