hashimoto's encephalopathy

My mom is a 61 year old female with a history of Thyroid disorders in our family, she has a goiter with multiple nodules.  The doctor says her tsh level is normal but she is in the hospital with sever mental confusion, inability to put words together unable to swallow and multiple other symptoms.  The doctor seems to think that it is dementia related but I feel that this is more related to a thyroid disorder.  I have been researching Hashimotos Encephalopathy and she seems to fit all fo the symptoms..Any suggestions from anyone on what to do?

Have her TPO anti-bodies checked.

If they are extremely high, that is a good indication that she may have Hashimoto's Encephalopathy.

It is caused by the anti-bodies, not the TSH level. If she is suffering from that, a few days of the proper treatment should show her improving much.

I can't remember if it is treated with steroids or what, but it is easy to Google and find out.

What was her last TSH result?  Has she had an ultrasound?  Has she gotten a second opinion from an endorcinologist?  I had many of these symptoms when I was really hypothyroid.  Have they checked her for any blockages in the brain.  There could be many reasons for her symptoms.  Has she had a CAT scan or MRI?  Maybe a little more medical info would be helpful>
