i have hyothyroidism

Im wondering because its really hard for me to gain weight and having hypo its all wierd to me. With hypo doesn't it mean I should gain weight instead of loose weight. Its strange that instead of gaining I'm loosing. Does this happen to anyoj else with hypo::::?????

It supposedly can happen during the early stages of hashimoto's, where the body fluctuates back and forth between hyper and hypo. When I first started having symptoms (feeling cold, when others do not) I was underweight, and continued to be so for almost a decade. Of course, I was in my teens and early 20s, so other hormones, and lifestyle might've been a factor. However, after that period, still undiagnosed, I started gaining 5 pounds a month. Luckily, I caught on quick, and switched to diet beverages, and that seemed to level things out.

But yeah, it's not common. Just consider yourself one of the lucky few, if having such a chronic disease can be considered lucky. I try to tell myself, that out of all the autoimmune diseases, this is probably the better one to have, but I'm sure some people who might've experienced the worst symptoms might disagree with me.

You could be in a hyper phase of Hashimoto's, but you'd also feel somewhat hyper.  Not everyone who is hypo gains weight.  We've had a couple others on the forum who didn't.

Just consider yourself one of the lucky ones, for the time being, and if you don't eat a good healthy diet now, you should get in the habit.  Make water your drink of choice, because even diet drinks can cause weight gain, by making you crave sweets.

what meds are you on and how much and what was your last blood test...

too much t3 can trigger weight loss... I didn't lose when I was overmedicated but some people are different..just felt hyper....migraines etc..

.but have read that too much t3 since it is linked to metabolism can trigger weight loss... or just the right dosage can..you should be in the top one third of normal range with your blood test with ft3 and ft4 should be over the half way mark of normal in testing...

you need to make sure you notify your doctor of this and make sure that it is not some other underlying issue that needs to be addressed immediately because if you are losing a lot, then it you could also be losing too many nutrients as well....that your body needs...

Just to make sure I understand.... are you losing weight, or just not gaining?

What med/dosage are you on?  How long have you been on it?

Do you have thyroid lab results that you could post, so we could get a better idea of your actual status?  Be sure to include reference ranges with any labs posted, since ranges vary lab to lab and have to come from your own report.

What med and dosage are you on and how long have you been on it?  Is this weight thing something that started with the med?

Do you have symptoms of over medication?

I also lose weight or just maintain.  I have central hypothyroid diagnosed in Jan.  I had to go gluten free about 1.5 yrs ago.  Once I did that I dropped 15 lbs.  Then was diagnosed with the thyroid issues in Jan.  I actually work to maintain now.   Not complaining since I know so many others struggle and it could go other way any moment.

TSH. .624   Orig .08. (.35 - 4.5)
FT3.  2.1.  Orig  2.     (2.3 - 4.2)
FT4.  .89. Orig .7       (.8 - 1.8)

I am still working to get to the right FT4 levels.  Hope to find a new dr.

Your FT3 level is actually below range - while you need to work to get FT4 levels up, FT3 is most important, as that's what the cells actually use.

What medication are you on?  And what dosage?

I noticed you have a thread of your own asking about a doctor.
