Recently diagnosed

I've recently (mid Dec) been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid.  I don't know what type or what levels they were, the doc just said it was underactive.

I was incredibly relieved to find out because prior to this, I've been too exhausted to get out of bed, shaking all the time, eating far too much (even when I wasn't hungry! - if I didn't munch something then the shakes would start), fainting, dry skin, depressed etc etc.

So, he put me on a low starting dose of 50 mgs and asked me to get my blood tested again six weeks from then.  For the first week and a bit I felt fantastic. I'd forgotten how it is to be normal!  The shaking stopped, I stopped eating anything that moved, I could get out of bed.  Over the last few days though that 'normal' feeling started to wear off by 11am and this weekend I've noticed that I'm once again having to eat to not get the shakes.  I'm knackered again too, its like I'm back at square one.  I phoned the doctors up and the receptionist just said there was nothing they could do I need to wait til the end of Jan to get blood tests done again.  i don't know if I can get through the month feeling like this!   Is there anything I can do to help myself, is there any special diet that might work and why do they make you wait six weeks?

Sorry that my first post is such a moany one but I've got no-one to talk to about this!  Thanks.

Jo

A bump is an increase in meds. I would ask to be tested every 6 weeks while you are adjusting your medication level. Always make sure you get copies of your lab results so you can post them here for us to take a look at.  :)

Nah I'm in the UK and I think its probably a bit slower.  They haven't mentioned any plans for scans, just blood tests.  :(  I know he says I will need more than 50 but I need to start off lower at first.  Whats a bump?

Six - 8 weeks is the standard wait time. It *****. I felt the same after my first few bumps. My endo waits 3-4 weeks. I found him on this website.

You sound like you need a bump. Has the doc tested your antibodies (TGab and TPOab) to determine if Hashimoto's is behind this? Have you had a thyroid ultrasound? The doc should have done this when it was discovered you have low thryoid.
