I had a hemi-thyroidectomy Nov 18 and feel like they've stitched up my windpipe! I'm assuming I'll get used to it, but I think my after effects of them putting an elasplast strip over the wound sending my head to swell up hugely and my body shakin non stock was just unreal. I actually had an alert bracelet on saying I was allergic! I'm just hoping I wont need the other bit removing. They havent said if I've got cancer or if it was a cyst or anything - I have to go back next week so I'm assuming everythings fine. I dont feel as if I've been treat particularly well, but who does? Complain and they'll be even worse?
Hello,
I had a hemi-thyroidectomy a few days ago and I'm experiencing the tightness when swallowing. You had your operation in ealry 2010, how does you neck/throat feel now? I'm just wondering about the exercises too, I was never advised. I guess its common sense, gentle stretches etc. An update on your progress would be appreciated. I hope you're back to normal.

Hi Joanna,
I too have had my right hemi removed 13 days ago on the 25 March 2010. The lump in my throat is much better sometimes I have to put my head down if I eat meat or something of a solid nature to swallow. It's still a little uncomfortable to swallow. The swelling has come down by fifty percent I think anyway, the swelling seemed more than the goitre itself. I still have that horrible neck pain but I have decided to stop pain medication because it is making my stomach feel yuk! I have mainly used codeine and Iboprufen. I have been off pain relief for 48 hrs and the neck pain is about 4 out of 10. I am going to try warm compresses...hope this helps Oh I also suffer from TMJ so I am not sure if this makes the symptoms worse my follow up is next week.

Hi Joanna,
My right thyroidectomy was 6-17 and only the past 2 days or so I have not been annoyed by that lump in my throat feeling. It takes a while, and the neck pain will subside too, may have been a vice, I don't know, but I think it may just be from cautiously holding my head while sleeping and such so I baby the cut? But really only three weeks later I feel much better and look much better too, the cut is hardly visible anymore, and I haven't even started applying cream yet because I was waiting for all the scabs to fall off, which they finally have. Hope this helps, recovery is a short time away. Rest and enjoy feeling a little better each day- all my best to you. Hugs...Laura
Hi Joanna,
From what I remember, feeling like there is something in your throat is pretty normal. I had a lobectomy, then the total thyroidectomy 2 weeks later. And from what I
understand, the ache in the back and sides of your head is from the position, I
do remember that well. Now you make me wonder, how DID they keep my head still?
Maybe a vice? LOL.
I hope this helps and I wish you a speedy recovery!
Take Care,
Terri
