thyroid nodules

I had an ultrasound of my thyroid recently. I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 3 years ago. It was found that I have on the right lobea 1.8cm complex nodule in the mid to lower pole and on the left lobe the is a 2.5 cm upper pole nodule. Both nodules were not felt on physical examine. My TSH level was up and my  medication was changed .  I am schedule for a FNA with ultrasound next week.  I have been unable  to find out the meaning of complex nodule.

Hi Mary,

I too had 'simple' and  'complex' nodules attached to my thyroid gland.  My best understanding is the 'simple' ones appear to be 'fluid filled' and of lesser concern.  My 'complex nodule' was tested with an FNB and came out negative- which was great.  My understanding is that when the nodule is described as complex, it means there is more 'substance' to the nodule, rather than simple fluid.  Here one can rule out certain pre-cancerous conditions, and the like.  I don't know if this helps.  I did just fine; albeit having a total thyroidectomy, eventually, because of the uncertainty of the diagnosis.  FNB's can be false negatives if the exact site where the sample is taken happens to not contain any cancer cells, etc.  In my case, I was extremely HyPer thyroid, and getting worse.  Those two reasons were why I made the choice for surgery.  Best of Wishes!
