wtf is wrong with my thyroid

hi,
there is no hx of thyroid problems in my family except for a maternal grandmother had hers out in '57 for unknown reasons.
i have never had thyroid trouble until this past summer where it went from normal range in may or june to 97 three months later.  this had me scared to death.
it's being treated by a shrink and he is ultra-conservative with meds.  he also treats for bipolar disorder with lithium and a benzo but no ad.  after 5 months of 50 mcg levo it went from 97 to 40 and i was mad as a hornet - it doesn't take that long to get the tsh down to within normal limits and 40 is also a lousy reading.
they raised it to 75 mcg.
i don't know what it is lately but i continue to feel lousy and i worry a lot about what this could be doing to my health in general - irrevocable problems, cardio problems, stuff like that.
first i'd like to know some of this things that could spike a tsh up to 97 from normal in only a couple months.  i heard this is quite atypical.
then i'd like to know where 97 falls on the continuum - bad, not good, horrific, medical emergency, average, etc.
then i'd like to know if an endocrinologist could get it down faster or would be less hesitant to give me a higher dose of levo, etc.
i'd like to know if armour thyroid might make me feel better in the long run even though it's trickier - i wouldn't mind getting blood work done a lot for armour if i could feel better ultimately rather than taking a synthetic med like levo.
i really want to know what on earth could make my thyroid become so nonfunctioning so fast - could it have been exposure to something toxic or more like a bad cold or flu?
thanks.

p.s. - i sure wish there were weekly versions of levo like prozac weekly or a patch.  can this be found anywhere?

First thing I would recommend would be to find yourself an actual "thyroid doctor"
YOu need to be tested for Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroid disease.
The normal ranges for TSH is .30-3.0....so you are a long long way off.  You also need to have a FREE T4 and FREE T3 tests done with the TSH.  Hypothyroidism can cause a huge amount of emotional and mental disorders including:  depression, anxiety, panic, etc. Makes me wonder if some of your symptoms could actually be from your thyroid?
Hashimoto's causes the thyroid to fail, and sometimes very quickly.  If I were you, I would quickly find myself a good thyroid dr.
There are no weekly meds for thyroid. They are all daily taken meds.

Laura is correct in her posting.
But you should be having your doses adjusted every 4-6 weeks until they are stable...not 6 monthly???
Ask your Doc to do 4 weekly testing until the levels start to stabilise.
