Abnormal LFT test readings

Me and my wife are adopting a 3 month female infant. The infant we are planning to adobt her liver function test shows a high value of SGPT-149 and SGOT-115. We got more tests done for further investigation. Is there a liver disease or damage, can it be cured. We want to know whether we should go ahead with the adoption or not.

Elevated liver enzymes indicate inflammation of the liver - hepatitis. As to whether or not it can be cured it depends on what is causing it. Adoption agencies do these tests to see if perhaps you have a serious alcohol problem.  If you drink alcohol, you need to stop completely for a month and repeat the tests. If you do not drink alcohol, you need to have your doctor run tests for chronic hepatitis (Hepatitis B and C) and even acute hepatitis (Type A).  Medications can also cause this - cholesterol medicines and even Prilosec.  Although this degree of liver enzyme elevation is not critical - if it indicates a chronic problem, it can go on to cause liver failure in the future, so you need to know what is causing it.

The liver is a very pliable organ. Just on the info you provided I can't tell you whether or not it can be cured as the numbers provided don't really determine what specific condition she is dealing with. Good Luck! I hope that you get a dx soon and are presented with multiple treatment options
