Slurred Speech

My speech is more clear then slurred (as I like to believe). I noticed when I have  conversations with people, they always say "what?"  I have been ignoring it for the last few years.  Then when I was talking to my mom a few days ago she did not understand a word I said.  She became very frustrated and said I really have a hard time understanding what you say!" She was very direct with me and said I need to get help. I am really embarassed to discuss this with any one.  Can any one help me?? Or direct me where to get help??

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
What you have is probably dysarthria or distorted speech due to inability to coordinate the muscles of speech. Local causes like fixed tongue, thick tongue, and cracked tongue should be looked into. Transient ischemic attack, Wilson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, brain tumor, myasthenia gravis etc are some of the causes of dysarthria.
Extreme tiredness, high fever, hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, high blood sugar, kidney problems causing brain fog, liver problems causing brain fog, low electrolytes, very high blood pressure, alcohol or drug intoxication, etc can all cause slurred speech. Please do not ignore this and consult a doctor ASAP or maybe go to the ER.  MRI of the brain, dental examination, nerve conduction studies, kidney and liver function tests etc will be required. Please do not be embarrassed as this can be a serious medical problem. Take care!

Quite clearly you need a neurological examination and both an MRI and an MRA.

Both. Not one alone. Then an EEG.

An x-ray or CAT screen are inappropriate.

They are obsolete.

Once structural abnormalities and damage are ruled out a neurological disease must be considered.

Don't be embarrassed or depressed. None of this is your fault.

Often there is a dysfunction of part of the brain that does not interfere with intelligence or reasoning ability.

Generally a good neurologist will know all of this and you will be put through the appropriate routine.
