Throbbing thigh pain

I occasionally get a throbbing upper thigh pain ion my left leg, it comes and goes, very painful. What can it be?

Thigh pain is associated with deep vein thrombosis, or vascular compromise in the arteries of the leg.

To rule this out a color dopplar is performed using ultrasound.
