respritory

I am a 14 year old girl I have had a sore throat every day for 4 years and had tonsils removed 2 years ago, pneumonia 3 times twice as an infant and once when I was 7 that time I had to be life flighted from a childs hospitle to a specialty hospitle and had my lungs drained with a fever of 104 for 3 or 4 days. I currently weigh 198 pounds and have stayed at that weight for 2 years. I have allergies all year long and constant sinus problems. for all my life I have had nose bleed problems. For the past 3-4 weeks i have been coughing nonstop for days at a time with no mucus coming up and I have had difficulty breathing. my nose bleeds 1-3 times per day ( that started 7 days ago) and I have been more tired recently. am I just paranoid or is there something wrong with me?

Sorry to hear that you have been so unwell and are still having problems.

You obviously have allergies that are not being dealt with.
It may be that you have an allergy to something that is causing this cough rather than it be a bacterial or viral infection.

I suggest you make an appointment to see your doctor so that he can check your lung function.  As you are having breathing problems and you have had a lot of respiratory problems also with your lungs in the past, you do need to get your throat, ears and lungs examined.

By what you say, it is highly likely that you have asthma.  Even if you do not have asthma but are having difficulty in breathing, your doctor is likely to prescribe Ventolin which is a spray that will help to open up your respiratory tubes.

As you have still ongoing problems with a sore throat and nose bleeds, have you had a referral to the ears, nose and throat specialist?  If not then you should be as well as having allergy tests done (if you have not had this done) and given the appropriate antihistamine medication or injections for this.

Because you are having difficulty in breathing, make an appointment urgently.

Let me know how you get on.

Best wishes.

It means that you may have an arthritic condition.
Children can get problems with their knees and arthritis.

The most important thing is to sort our your breathing problems first.
But your knee and thigh problem also needs to be looked at by your doctor.

I presume that you are of a healthy weight?
Have been doing any strenuous exercises or gym or sports at school that may have aggravated any problems in your thigh and knee?

You can apply a cold compress to the knee and take pain relief as directed on the packet for your age.  Don't take Ibuprofen,  this is an anti-inflammatory but can upset the stomach and cause side effects.

I am sorry to hear that, that is absolutely dreadful.

It may be worth asking your doctor to refer you to a different ears, nose and throat specialist.  Your certainly do need some help.

Taking Sudafed is not very good long term.  Personally I am not able to take this.  It can cause blood pressure to go up which is not very good.

Rather than take the Sudafed which is used as a decongestant and it dries things up, have you and your mum tried steam inhalations?

To do a steam inhalation boil up a kettleful of water and pour this into a bowl (taking care not to get scalded).  Put some Vick or Olbas oil (or any menthol drops you prefer) into the hot water.  Bend your head over the bowl and cover your head and the bowl with a towel.  Breathe in the steam through your nose and out through your mouth.  You may find it a bit strong and you may want to get out from under the towel for a few seconds.  If you can do this for about 10 minutes duration and if you can about 4 times a day (even if you do it once or twice it is better than nothing).  This will help to unblock any congestion.

As you are having breathing problems, you can also put some Vick on your chest. Putting a few drops of menthol or Olbas oil on a handkerchief and breathing it will also help to unblock any congestion.

My brother-in-law could not take antihistamines, and he used to get injections for his severe allergies.  I do not know what it was called.

If you do have any animals in the house, you may have to consider not keeping any.  A lot of people are allergic to house dust mite droppings which can not been seen, so you may have to wipe surfaces with a wet cloth.  If you do have any soft toys in your bedroom, get rid of them.  You can place them into a plastic bag and put it into the freezer for a day or so, that will help to kill off any dust mites, especially if any of the soft toys that you would like to keep cannot be washed.

Do make an urgent appointment to see your doctor.
Should your breathing get worse, get your mum to take you to the nearest hospital.  Not being able to breathe and having an asthma attack can be very dangerous.

Hope you get sorted out soon.
Best wishes.

I have seen a ear nose and throught doctor and he said i was lying as he found nothing wrong. I have yet to do an allergy test but I am immune to all allergy medications except for sudafed which I am begining to get immune to as well because I practically live on it as does my mom.
