Tonsilitis ?? White patches on tonsils mean they are affected and maybe need to be removed.... His throat is swollen hence why he cannot swallow properly...Suggest you take him to a Doc ASAP.

White patches on the tonsils are generally pus and can be caused by a number of things, such as tonsillitis, thrush, or mono.  I'd recommend taking him in to see an MD.  I've had my tonsils removed due to recurring tonsillitis and the sooner he can get on antibiotics if that's what it is, the sooner his pain and other symptoms will go away.

Sounds like strep throat to me. My daughter got it alot when she was young. Your son will need an antibiotic and the sooner the better as it won't go away on its own and could turn itself into scarlet fever. Good luck.
