Low sperm Motility

Does anyone know the causes of low sperm motility.  My wife and I have experienced 3 miscarriages and we have been in Fertility for over 1 year. The only thing that was found that is abnormal after extensive testing was my sperm motility.   The doctors are amazed that we are even able to get pregnant, but we want to be able to conceive a child and carry full term.   Does anyone know if there is any correlation to low sperm motility and reoccurring miscarriages and is there anything we can do about it?

Hi Dr. Lacuesta,
Thank you for the information.  On Thursday, my husband is doing a test that looks for DNA fragmentation of sperm.  I think there are 2 test the SDD and SPFA (something like that)  and the test come from Repromedix.  Our Fertility specialist suggested we do that. Any way, she said if there is a high abnormal DNA of the sperm, then we should think about doing IVF with Pre-Implantation Genetic testing.  Well, the downside of that is it is $17,000.
She said in the mean time there is no reason we shouldn't keep trying, but I concerned we will conceive a child with birth defects. My husband had a Karotype test and that was OK.  My question is, if this test we do with the genetic testing of the sperm turns out OK, should we just keep trying on our own?  We were thinking we should (if everything is OK) and then if we don't get pregnant by the summer of 09'  then we would proceed with the IVF with pre-implantation genetic testing.    What do you think?  He is 32 and I am 27.
I appreciate your response and I am going to look that website up right now.   This has been an awful road for us so far and we are desperate to have children.
Thank you so much!

Hi,

There seems to be no well explained cause for low sperm motility. Some genetic alterations have been pointed out like microdeletions in th Y chromosomes. In terms of its association with miscarriages, there seems to be no definite figures to show us any clear cut relationships. Sperm motility as an issue of infertility still seems to be baffling and complex.

Has your physician discussed in vitro fertilisation or intracytoplasmic sperm injections as an option?

I know I was't able to answer your questions and I do hope I can help you more on these.

I attached a URL you may want to read on regarding alternative options for your condition maybe, for future reference.
