Someone please help! Urine Retention

Hi everyone,

So have been suffering with this for about a week now - I am a 22 year old female, fairly healthy except asthma and slight depression.

Started on Friday the 21st, i felt a slight stinging when i urinated but didn't think anything of it. Weeing normally on the Saturday however my vaginal area felt like i had been kicked which wore off. Sunday was weeing fairly normally as well, stinging still continued and started to take cystitis drinks to see if that helped - made no difference. Monday felt like i needed to wee but i couldn't go, so i went to a walk in centre who tested me for a uti and it came back negative, she told me to see my doctor. Monday night saw my doctor who tested me again for a uti, this came back negative again and said it could be period pains and I came on my period on the Friday when it all started (even though i am on the contraceptive pill that is meant to stop my periods all together, i recently changed this pill so i put it down to that). Tuesday I seemed to be urinating okay, i could go whenever i needed to with a slight sting but this was wearing off. Wednesday was a struggle, my bladder was full (distention) and felt like i was bursting but couldn't go, it was like my muscles just weren't relaxing - I was at work and felt like i was going to wet myself but couldn't go so i went home and as soon as i got home i could wee?? Decided earlier in that day that i would go to a&e and as soon as i got home i went for a wee (literally straight away) and took a sample to the hospital with me. Was tested again for a UTI and came back clear. Dr felt my abdomen and said everything felt fine but my bladder was full. Told me to have an STD test (even though I know I am clear) and if that is fine it is all psychological. I had been weeing slightly whilst waiting in the hospital but not enough was coming out to empty my bladder.

Thursday didnt feel like the answer from the hospital was enough so called my gp who said even though my results for a uti were coming up negative it could be a false negative so gave me antibiotics for 3 days. They made no difference.

Friday seemed ok, really needed a wee, bladder was full but wee wouldn't come out. Ended up going 3 times that day. 2 - 3 times a day is the max i am going but previously i could wee whenever i wanted and was a lot more frequent than that.

Saturday was my worst day. Wee'd at 9pm on the Friday night, Saturday felt like i was desperate to go but couldn't. Ended up in hospital again, got there at 6pm and as soon as i got to the hospital i went for a wee??? Dont know if it is psychological or coincidence that I ended up going. Had a blood test and was told my creatinine levels were slightly high but nothing to be concerned about, just need to be retested within a week. Abdominal examination was normal and said my bladder was empty and sent me home.

Since then I have had the same issue. My bladder feels full and is distended but as soon as I sit down to go nothing is coming out even though I am bursting! I am weeing about 3 times a day, but when i do eventually go the stream comes out normally but i am stressing that i wont go again for a number of hours so i squeeze my muscles to ensure that I am getting everything out (to the point where i poo a bit). Just find it a bit strange that 2 completely different doctors are saying it is psychological. When I was younger I had a slightly shy bladder and wouldnt be able to go if i was on a plane or travelling for a long period of time, however as I have gotten older this disappeared and I could urinate whenever I wanted. Maybe it is psychological because when i leave work i focus on getting home and going for a wee and end up having to stop for a toilet nearby and i end up going!

It's getting so frustrating and depressing, I am so upset about this and feel like it is destroying my life. I am constantly googling what could be wrong with me and I am scared I could be doing some type of internal damage. If it is psychological why is no one helping me. Not sure what to do. If anyone can offer advice that would be great! I dont want to live my life like this!

Thanks xx
