Hello, I have been told my left kidney is dead and that I have started with what I believe to be hydronephrosis in my remaining kidney.  I am due to see my nephrologist for my first appointment in one months time - is that too long a time to wait???  Is it possible that having had surgery could have caused this condition because I had no kidney problems before I had an oopherectomy and hysterectomy?

Thank you.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Hydronephrosis can be caused by obstruction of the ureters or bladder outlet. Hydronephrosis can also result from reflux (retrograde leakage of urine from the bladder up the ureters to the renal pelvis. It can be diagnosed by various imaging measures, ultrasound being one of them. Whilst ultrasound allows for visualisation of the ureters and kidneys (and determine the presence of hydronephrosis and / or hydroureter), an IVU is useful for assessing the anatomical location of the obstruction. But now CT is the investigation of choice for finding out the obstruction.

I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
