You're young - and should not have this type of issue. I'm sorry.

Waiting can be more than challenging! I just hate our system. I understand it's even worse in the VA.

I had a terrible episode of what I DX  (and was confirmed) as Acute Brachial Plexus Neuritis. I'm telling you for almost 4 weeks it was one of thee worse pain I've had in my life.

Our system is a joke. It took me almost a week to just see a PCP - regardless of the amount of pain I was experiencing - then weeks of x-rays and MRIs. Following that another 3 1/2 weeks to see a Neurologist - from there a referral to consult a Neurosurgeon scheduled a month out. The best we can do is over three months to get answers when one has an episode of  acute, unbearable pain?  There's something very, very wrong with our system.

No wonder our disease or conditions statically have a less than favorable outcome than in many other countries. Sadly it's only going to get worse.

Just for the books - I cancelled my neurosurgeon consult and the last test they ordered. My pain has subsided - as neuritis often does. The amount of help I received from the medical community? 0 - yes that's, Zero!  The amount of money they collected from my insurance - many thousands!

That was a long story to say I understand the often grueling wait. :o)  Sorry if I got carried away. I'm so disheartened with the medical community.

I'll still be looking forward to hearing how you are doing - and what you discover. As always I wish you well.

Peace,

Thanks for your input.  I have an appointment with my Primary Care Dr today. I am a 59 year old veteran and get my health care thru the VA. I will request a consultation with a urologist. It may take awhile but hopefully I will get an appointment. Again thank you for your time.

I've lost count of the number of Foley Catheters I've instilled. It's not usual to  meet resistance when inserting a cath. Do you have an enlarged prostrate? Are you a senior?

In my opinion when two nurses could not instill your Foley the physician should have been notified. Again in my opinion, the catheter should not have been forced. I would not have instilled the catheter - but than I wasn't one of your nurses. I want to apologize as this is not normal procedure.

At this point I would consult a Urologist. I doubt any permanent damage has been done. FYI - when a catheter leaks it's usually do to one of two things - it's not in the bladder (or in correctly) - or the "balloon" that holds it in the bladder is not inflated enough (it's inflated with sterile water).

UTIs are normal (sadly) with indwelling catheters. The fact that it took three attempts to insert it also raised the possibility of introducing bacteria into the bladder.

I've never heard your problem post catheterization. However I didn't work specifically in Urology. If you are basically healthy in that area I can't conceive of a reason for you to not be producing sperm - including seminal fluid. It's my guess you are still producing both.

Reading and a little research tells me that you may be experiencing what is called retrograde ejaculation. This occurs when the muscle in the area between your bladder and urethra doesn't function correctly. This muscle normally closes the bladder during ejaculation - if it's not working properly your ejaculation ends up in the bladder.

The condition can be DX (diagnosed) by a simple UA (Urine Analysis). Please consult your Urologist. I hope you reported your concern regarding the Foley Catheter instillation. If not do so now - it may be too late but records still exist. Three different Foleys should have been used and charged - probably to your insurance company. If you fail once with insertion the Foley must be discarded and a new one obtained - this is done to maintain sterile technique.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.  If you have additional questions feel free to ask - I'll do my best to reply.

Remember I am not a medical provider and my comments should not be subsided for one - nor should they be viewed as any form of a DX or medical advice. You best answers will come from your Physician.

I'll look forward to hearing from you.

The first  two nurses could not insert the catheter. When they called for help the third nurse pushed it so hard it felt like he was going to push it out the other side. It leaked the whole time it was in and I ended up with a UTI. I have no problem getting an erection but no seamen ever comes out. Any ideas what could cause this?

Hi Sedlock,

Welcome to the Urology Forum.

In my many years in the medical field I have not heard of insertion of a catheter causing damage to the prostrate.

The urethra (through which the catheter is inserted into the bladder) runs through the center of the prostate, from the bladder to the penis. Although the prostrate surrounds this urethra it's very unlikely it would be injured in  catheterization. It's fairly protected.

That said, Urethral injury due to trauma can be associated with the insertion of a Foley catheters if the catheter is inserted forcefully or roughly. I hope that no one was rough or forceful with you.

What are you SX (symptoms)?
