Bleeding 12 years after hysterectomy

What could be the possible reasons for vaginal bleeding when a woman has not had her uterus or cervix for nearly 12 years? In 1994, I had a total hysterectomy (removal of my uterus, cervix, & one ovary). My cervix was removed because of pre-cancerous tissues. I began experiencing a vaginal discharge in Nov. 2005 after recommencing sexual relations after abstaining for six years.  Also in Nov. 2005 I noticed old blood coming from the vaginal area (it was brown) and a slight smell.  I thought maybe the sex was too hard. I was checked in December 2005 by my general practitioner for STDs and HIV.  All the rest results came back normal and/or negative.  The smell and discharge decreased; almost faded totally away.  But now in January 2006, although I have not had intercourse since November 2005, I began smelling the smell again and the discharge has increased.  It has changed in its look and consistency.  It has been white, milky, but lately it has been somewhat watery.  Recently I had a rush discharge where I had to run to the restroom. There was blood on my dress.  The blood is pink.  I went to my primary care physician who said I had a bladder infection because she thought I was bleeding from my urine are and she prescribed an antibiotic.  She did not do a pap smear.  I went to a different doctor later that day and she did a pap smear.  She confirmed that I was actually bleeding from the vaginal area, more specifcally I believe she said from my vaginal cuff.  I am nervously and anxiously awaiting the results.  What are possibilities?

I have read many post about women bleeding years after a hysterectomy. I have had it 4x....I saw my primary, gynocologist, urologist, 3 trips to the emergency room....no answers....numerous test....finally 2 weeks ago I went to urgent care for same systems...extreme lower back pain, bleeding in the urine and scared! Finally a doctor try to put a diagnosis to my problems...sent me to a urogynocologist...I had to have a cystoscopy in the hospital and I was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis plus I had a hunner's ulcer. I have been scared for a year I had some type of cancer. Ladies...don't wait...go to a specialist. I know it is frustrating when no doctor can tell you what is wrong when you know something is! Good luck

I had my uterus an cervix removed 7 years ago because of precancerous cells. I had my ovaries removed in May of this year due to endometriosis. I have been to the hospital two times for vaginal bleeding, I would spot after too much lifting...started in August. Tests were ran, no STI's or any other inferction for that matter, even had a MRI with no findings. This morning, November 3, 2014, around 4 am I go to the restroom and notice bright red blood with a few clots. I am officially scared. I am happy to see I'm not alone, but I am still concerned...for us all.

I went on this website because my wife is having the same problems so many of the women who have posted here are experiencing. 20 years post hysterectomy and now recently experiencing sporadic spot bleeding. I have been a practicing chiropractor for 28 years and have learned NOT to get over reactive, but now that this is happening to my wife it concerns me. I was extremely frustrated that there were no answers or solutions on this site so I found a website that I will quote from....

"Causes of bleeding after hysterectomy are: vaginal dryness, “mini periods,” menopause, and insufficient hormone replacement therapy. Vaginal dryness, a common side effect of hysterectomy, makes vaginal tissues thinner and more prone to bleeding from sexual intercourse or other irritations. One can even develop fissures, or cracks, in dry vaginal tissues that cause bleeding. “Mini periods” can continue if you had a subtotal hysterectomy and the cervix was retained. Essentially, a tiny portion of uterus remains, and as the ovaries continue to cycle, that small piece of uterus continues to shed lining just as before. Menopause also still comes to those who have had hysterectomies but retained one or more ovaries, and the hormonal changes might cause vaginal dryness and slight spotting from time to time. Similarly, hormone imbalances from insufficient HRT (hormone replacement therapy) can cause the same types of issues.

Any unexplained bleeding warrants a trip to the doctor, just to be sure. Even if there is no pain and spotting is light, you will want to rule out cancer or precancerous conditions for your peace of mind. A quick pap smear or biopsy will let you know if any abnormal cells are present and further investigation is required. If it is simply vaginal dryness, estrogen cream or lubricants might solve your slight bleeding easily. Silver nitrate treatments applied by your gynecologist directly to bleeding tissues can also clear up the problem quickly."

This information made the most sense to me based on my medical background and I hope it helps all of you women out there searching for an answer.  God Bless.

Thank you, kind doctor, for your words of wisdom!  Yes it is best not to get too upset about vaginal bleeding post hysterectomy, and yes women, don't put off seeing your doctor about it! It is nice to get fresh but calming advice in a site like this, when womens fear seems to build upon each other's.  Good luck out there everyone!  I'm here myself because I'm experiencing the same type of thing, and I am worried too!  Love, Your friendly critical care cardiac nurse.
Thank you for these comments. I had a partial hysterectomy in 2009, they left my ovaries. But then 1 year later, I had a cyst that was grown on my ovary and they did some blood test which came back at a high level for possible cancer. My pap of course was off as well. I ended up having everything removed, tubes, everything because I had so much endometriosis all tangled inside so we got that taken care of in 2010. Then a few months later I found out that my stomach opening to my small intestines had scar tissued over at first they thought I had cancer again, but 4 surgeries later, because everytime they would create me a new opening in my stomach it would literally scar back over within 6 to 8 months. So all of the above caused me to loose the portion of the small intestine that grabs your nutrients so I do not know how many blood, iron, magnesium, etc., infusions I have had. The last stomach surgery was Dec 2016. Then in March of 2017 I had these red dots basically covering my entire body. Turns out it was basil cells but they were matatisizing so quickly due to my poor immune system they would turn into melanoma. I could not have my whole body radiated nor could I do chemo thru the veins. They put me on this daily chemo pill and I was on it 6 months and OMG it was the worst experience of my life. Ending up having an adverse reaction on me so in June 2018 they took me off chemo to give me a break and focused on doing this new blue light radiation on some of the big ones. NOW TODAY, Jan 19, 2019, I am having signs that my stomach which I barely have any left, when they do the contrast on me, it pours through my stomach in 60 seconds and down to my colon within 1 minute so all 90 pounds of me really is not getting anything from eating. But now I have started the throwing up again, feeling such heartburn, etc. BUT this is not what is scaring me. So I have all these spots all over me again and now I am bleeding from my vagina. Especially when I have a bowel movement because the medicines they have me on make me extremely constipated, but bright red blood mixed with white will trickle out and when I wipe it will be on the toilet paper. Plus it looks like yogurt or something, jelly like and it has a fish smell which I have never experienced.

Shame on me, but with all the other stuff I have had going on I have not had a pap smear since 2011. I am going on Tuesday for pap and an ultrasound, do not really get what the ultrasound is about, but I am scared to death. My small stomach is popped out and hard like I am about 3 months pregnant and it hurts even if you touch it. I  had to go to ER last week and they assumed I had a UTI because I had clumps of white blood cells in my urine???? But when it cultured out, no UTI. So now onto the OB to see what is going on.

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated. As you can see, I have been thru alot already so I am not scared to prepare for the worst, I just need to see if anyone else has seen anything with what I am living with

I had my hysterectomy and ovaries were left in because my dr said it would be better since they were healthy and that way my body wouldn't go into premature menopause  in December 2012, its been almost a year now. I noticed this evening that there was a light almost pink color of blood after I went to the bathroom. It has me worried, so I went to my mother who had her hysterectomy in June of 2005 due to ovarian cancer and at that time they removed a 17.2 lb tumor from her. Ok back to the story i'm getting offtrack here. Anyway, they did my hysterectomy because I had 12 tumors, heavy bleeding (so heavy I could go through an overnight always extra large pad in less than an hour, and my iron levels would drop to 6.2 causing me to be hospitalized for blood transfusions I was severely anemic. I asked my mom saying that this is really scary I thought that when you have a hysterectomy you no longer bleed and now I am she said well it isn't normal but just watch and if it gets worse we will get me back to Des Moines where I had my surgery and that is 4 hours away. I have seen several comments because the time span has been years but has anyone had this problem so soon and was it serious? I am scared right now.
