Do you ovulate if you dont have your period?

Okay.  I'm 23 years old and I have a very irregular period.  I only have it every 4 months or so and when I do it is really heavy.  I haven't had my period for about 3 months now.  I recently had sex and the guy came inside of me twice. Stupid mistake, I know.  That was about a week ago.  For the past couple days I have had really bad stomach cramps.  Almost like period cramps but it really isn't time for me to have my period.  I was just wondering if you do ovulate even if you dont have your period? Being pregnant isn't really a concern right now because I am assuming these are just period cramps, but I would like to know the answer just in case I dont start in the next week or so.  Should I worry about being pregnant?  I mean it's only been a week....would I even be able to tell anything yet?  I am pretty sure a test wouldn't work this soon but since I dont really know when I am going to have a missed period I'm not sure when I should take a test if I dont start.  I just need some advice.  I have talked to my mom about this and she just says that I'm stupid for thinking that I could be pregnant but it's my body.  Something just doesn't feel right.  I need help!

First, why would you let "the guy" come inside of you? I am going to err on the side of stupid, and assume this isn't some one-night stand and that you know his sexual history and have both been tested for stds.

Anyway - irregular periods mean irregular (if at all) ovulation. And you certainly wouldn't know at this point either way if you were pregnant. Many women who do these sort of things, make themselves believe they're pregnant so I would assume this is the case with you. Wait at least 2-3 weeks before you even consider any sort of pregnancy testing. (Altho you can probably start testing for stds now)

No this was not a one night stand.  I have been with this guy for about 5 years now.  I do know his history, which would be me.  We have both been tested for STDs.  I'm not trying to make myself believe that I am pregnant.  That is the last thing that I want.  I just found it weird that a week after it happened I have cramps like this.  I'm sorry that I am concerned.

if you do not want to become pregnant then you certainly are playing with fire? no?
are you on BC to regulate your periods or at least on BC so you do not want to get pregnant when you are not ready?
it MAY be too late? you could be pregnant. i would buy an HPT just to check in and see. however, i would not set in stone the results. given your "case"
i would say that it is too early to be feeling symptoms that's for sure. too early (typically) to ovulate although i ovulate wicked early (hence my 5 yr old).
its very difficult for any of us to even guess what could be going on since you are so irregular and of course we dont know your body. have you been for an obgyn appt recently?

My periods are also irregular the same as yours 2 to 3 times a year and I swear I was ovulating last week. I had the sticky clear discharge and lots of it sorry if tmi. I know I do not ovulate every month though, but I have been preg. before. My periods has always been the same since I started in 7th grade. So yes it is POSSIBLE to ovulate and get preg. with irregular periods. I hope everything works out for you. Good luck.

ok so im 18 years old, and i havent had a period in a year, i got on BC in august of last year to regulate my period, but instead i continued to not have one, therefore since jan. of 2007 i have only had 5 periods, 2 b4 the BC and 3 after, my last one was in october of last year.  can i still get pregnant if im not having a period?

I have always had irregular periods.  This last year they seem to be regulating themselves but once and a while I still do skip a period.  Right now I do believe it would be too soon to tell if you are pregnant...and since you are irregular this could just end up being a period or some spotting or hell just coincidentally just some cramping.  So it looks like you have some time to wait.

I did want you to know that years ago I stopped having periods for about six months and at the time I was trying to have a baby so I went to the doctors.  They had told me at that time that I was probably not ovulating and therefore not having a period but they were totally wrong.  A few months later I ended up getting pregnant and I had still not been getting periods.  So, just because you arent getting your period every month, dont assume that you arent ovulating.

someone else on here asked about the depo shot...yes sometimes it can take quite a while to get pregnant after being on the depo shot as with any other birth control.  For some women it can take as long as they were on it to get pregnant after stopping it.  But if you are truly concerned with this, it wouldnt hurt to talk with your OB about it and make sure there is nothing else going on.

I don't have irregular periods but i did have a phase when i did not have a period for 2 months. I went throught all of the dr. visirs and blood work...the whole nine! I had the same ? you have, and my dr. said if there is no period then there is no ovulation! I hope that this info helps a little.... The best way to avoid pregnancy is to be careful and avoid unsafe sex. Alot of us are desperately trying to have a baby and it kind of hurts to see a female become pregnant if that wasn't on her agenda. I hope things work out the way you want them to.

I have poly cystic ovarian syndrome which can cause your periods to be very irregular and cause infertility issues. This may be something you want to check for with your doc. We tried once upon a time for a baby, I want to say close to a year, to no avail. then I did get pregnant once, but the very next day I miscarried. This is another problem with pcos.

Hi All...

I used to have heavy and long periods up until last Nov. Doc put me on Progestrone and iron pills coz i was anemic from the blood loss. And after that i'v had regular periods for 3 months, feb 17 was my last period. I'm late about 2 months now. I took 2 HPT and 1 blood test about 2 wks ago and they were all neg. I feel so pregnant. I'm hot, hungry and sleepy all the time, nauseaus, heartburn, headaches and lower back ache. Am I crazy to think I'm pregnant even after those neg tests results? My husband and I been trying for 5 months. I'm 33 yrs.

I've been on the depo for 2 years and stop ped having a period last september 2009. For that two weeks my breast have been hurting and are getting bigger, i took a pregnancy test and it was negative but i still like i might be pregnant. My husband went with me to my dr yesterday and he was in such a rush that he confused me with maybe another patient. He didnt even exam me i told him about my breast and also that my stomach is bloated all the time and even firm around my abdomenn lower. he said i'm ovulating but i'm not believing that cause i havent had a period in year plus i read that your not supposed to ovulate on the depo. My husband even feels like i might be pregnant and i have been pregnant twice, first time with twins and second with my son so i know when my body is changing so what should i do i kinda want to switch dr's cause my dr wouldn't even feel my stomach like i wanted him to he really didnt do anything but make up excuses for all my symptoms and then tried putting me on another birth control called yaz and i had to tell him i'm on the depo.
so confused

This could be hormonal, or cervical cysts (the irregular periods that is) as far as the sharp cramps it could be period cramps or actually ovulation cramps. I get this really sharp pain in my sides (It alternates each month) that I used to think was my appendix but it was ovulation.  If you have ovarian cysts it can cause those pains.  To answer your ovulation without a period question the answer is yes you can ovulate without having a period. Your period is meant to cleanse the body and flush out the unfertilized eggs that you release. You ovulate before your period. If you haven't already done so I would go to your OB and talk with them. There are birth controls to help regulate and to help with cysts (if this is what you have).  I wish the best for you and your boyfriend, be careful with that heat of the moment no protection business...;)
