Not undestanding the whole cycle thing

So I'm 19yrs old and I had my cycle for about 5-6yrs now. Of course I never had to worry about when I'm fertile and ovulating and all that jazz. I just started using the calender on my last period which was last month. So my period should and hopefully will be coming in the about a week in a half or close to 2 weeks. I haven't started birth control yet because I never really thought that I would need it any time soon. So my point is I don't want to get pregnant anytime soon but just to educate myself I was wondering how do you know when it's a good time to have sex: for if you want to get pregnant or if you don't want to? What does the fertile bar mean on the calender? When I do start taking birth control what would be a good one to take? If I am pregnant when is the quickest I can find out(I started having sex about 2-3 weeks ago)?
