Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and Infertility

Hi!

I was wondering, When I was 16 I was hospitalized for PID. I haven't had any test that state that I am unable to have children. At the time of hospitalization I was told that infertility was a possibility. I'm wondering what tests I should request from my doctor at this time because my partner and I have decided that we want to have a baby. I need to find out 1.) If there is any scar tissue and 2.) If I'm infertal. I'm not sure what questioins to ask my Dr.

Hi,

PID can (but not always) cause infertily in women due to scar tissue on the fallopian tubes.  The (noninvasive) test to check to see if your fallopian tubes are damaged/blocked is called a hysterosalpingogram (HSG).   An HSG involves injecting dye through the cervix into the uterus and monitoring its flow through the tubes on a type of X ray.

I hope this helps some.  And I hope everything turns out great!! Good luck!

Also, if your tubes are blocked/damaged, you should consult a fertility specialist.  They can explain the different options you may have, such as microsurgery to try to repair the tubes (which most insurance companies pay for) or IVF (in vitro fertilization), etc.

Again, hope this helps some.
