Slightly Yellow Discharge/ Swollen Labia/BV?

Okay, heres my story. I had unprotected sex with a male partner. A couple days later, I noticed some minor itchy/irritation of the vulva. I went to my health center, they screened me for gonnohrea/chlaymdia/trich, etc. All came back negatitive. They said I had a yeast infection. Used the treatment they gave me, and it did not work. I then began to notice a slight yellow thin snotty looking discharge. I went to Planned Parenthood because I thought maybe they missed something. Had all the same screening done, and they said that I def had BV infection, and that all the std tests once again came back negatitive. They gave me flagyl, which seemed to clear up the discharge, but the vulva was still swollen/ irritated. Then I notice the discharge again, this time it is much heaver, and constant. I went to my obgyn, same std tests, neg results. Says she sees no sign of infection, sends me off like nothing is wrong. I have been dealing with this for months, is it possible that I do have an std infection and that these tests are not very accurate? If i did have trich, the flagyl should have cleared it up, and can BV cause this vulva irritation? They have even began to tell me I might have vulvodynia, this seems ridiculous, i have never had a problem before, and discharge is not normally a symptom?

your story sounds similar to the one i'm going through right now....i know, it's the most frustrating thing ever.  do you ever have an internal itching/burning or is it just the swollen labia and discharge?  one thing that i'm learning is that if they take a sample when symptoms are not there, it's not going to show anything.  Have they done a culture?  That might help figure out exactly what it is that they are not seeing on the slides.  Perhaps it is something that you are using in that area that is irritating you like scented soaps, thongs, etc.  Also, some discharge is normal, i've always had some, it could just be your body trying to clean itself out.  Vulvodynia is something that is possible as I've learned a lot about it from some of the other women on this forum, but i think it sounds like either an infection that's not showing up, an allergic reaction to a product, or both.  do any white blood cells show up on their slides?

BV can be very hard to get rid of. Once the vaginal immune system is out of whack it's difficult to bring it under control. And yes, the meds you take for bv can cause a swollen labia.  BV by itself usually does not have any pain associated withit in that area.

Try another doc. One who is willing to listen to your current history. Write it all down, what you experienced when, what you did to treat, and what tests were performed and the results. Go in prepared.

It sounds like reoccuring bacterial vaginosis.  Like the above poster stated, it can be a ***** to get rid of.  You may need to use the flagyl again.  I dont think it's an std b/c your tests would have been positive (at least one time.)

Vulvodynia is likely.  It's a mystery as to why your experiencing these symptoms, but at least you know what it's NOT.  Good luck!

Thank you all so much, they have done cultures and they all seem to come back negative including a pap smear. I am seeing a new doctor on Friday, and I hope that perhaps this new doctor can help, I will let you know. A thought I have had is that perhaps this BV is resistant to flagyl, Ive read some of this online? Does anyone know ifthere is a stronger medicine you can use?

from what you're saying i think it could just be an infection that is just not completely gone, which is also what i think i have...the trick is to go to the doctor when you are having symptoms....i am "patiently" waiting (if that is even possible) for my symptoms to really start acting up because i am tired of going to the doctor and having them tell me everything is normal...from what i'm learning, both bv and yeast can be very resistant and you might need a longer treatment....hang in there and know you're not alone by any means.

Hi, I just wanted to let eveyone know that I too have been have the same trouble for over a year now.  My doctor was not listeneing to me and kept treating me for BV and yeast infections and it was not going away.  I started seeing my old doctor and he said that it was due to inflamation.  So we have tried several of the same treatment that were discussed up above.  None of which has helped.  So last week I went to a new doctor and she took some samples from my cervic and Labia (very painful if you have this done) and they call me today with the results.  She said that it was due to chronic ulcers.  I never knew you could get ulcers in your vigina, but I guess you can.  She said that some times it can be related to an autoimmune (mis spelled) disorder.  I also have a thyroid disorder and just had to have it removed 3 weeks ago because it was inflamed and starting to cause breathing problems.  I asked if the inflamation could have spread through my body and be causing these problems and they said no, but I'm not sure it not all related.  Any way I go back to my thyroid doctor next week and she said to have him do some other test there to see about the autoimmune thing.  After I heard back from them I will post an update.  Hope this helps someone out there.

keep seeing a different doctor until you get a decent answer.  Its not normal and you shouldn't have to put up with it.  Try making a diary of your symptoms to see when there appear or are worse.  PS did you know some STI's wont show up in testing for up to a month after exposure to the disease (so your previous tests could have been too early and hence showed a false negative).  You know I wish doctors had to experience every sypmtom they brush off as normal.... it might make them much more sympathetic.

sorry i forgot to add that your sexual partner should be tested to (or he could just be reinfecting you) and i would recommend using condoms til its all sorted out

i get yeast infections very easily and i got sick and tired of buying the 3 or 7 day treatments (dont use the 1 days they dont work as well)  so i went to the health food store and bought a candida cleanse. also i started regularly taking acidopholis and a candida suppliment to help put good bacteria back into my body and regulate yeast overgrowth.  ive found this works great!  that and wear only cotton undies!

I am having a similar problem.  I have an itch (not really severe but persistent) and a yellowish discharge (looks kind of like mucous or snot...sorry for the picture) There is no odor and no burning when I urinate.  I thought it was a yeast infection but the discharge is different from what I have experienced with previous yeast infections. Any idea of what this could be?

Some discharge is normal, especially for sexually active women.
Where do you think his ejaculate goes? Some into uterus, but most stays in vagina and then flows out at some time. If his sperm is thick, you'll have thick discharge, if it is more like liquid, then that's what will be on your undies. Vulva can swell form being sexually aroused, and can even itch or be a bit painful until you finally have an orgasm.
Sometimes if you did not get satisfaction of an orgasm, the labia will stay swollen, since it is aroused, your female prostate can be swollen, your clitoris can be quite swollen, if you did not squirt or did not come.
Another reason for swelling, itching without infection can be that this area was physically handled quite a lot, friction and such, and when it heals, it itches. Use more lubricant, don't allow a guy to scratch it with his nails. Keep up with hygiene, but avoid soap. Soap will dry up the labia and make it itch.
Plus, if sex is quite rare occasion, you might swell every time after and even get yeast infection, which is just the overgrowth of your own vagina bacteria, the good one, but there becomes too much of it. It is called bride's itch. Try to have sex regularly, and it should subside, your vagina will get used to sexual intercourse. Male's sperm works miracles for vagina, it protects it from many bacteria, improves health of inner membranes, prevents ulcers down there.
Also, you can be allergic to latex, if you use condoms or sex toys that have latex. Try latex-free products.

Here's my story, Started in Jan 2010, I went to the doctor and he said it was possitive for yeast.  Have done 5 different treatments for yeast, all which helped but it never seemed to completley take it away.  But now the itch is gone so it has been easier to live with.  Current symtoms Excessive discharge that I need to wear pantiliners, it's thick and slightly yellow, and curdy.    When my doctor swabbed again in june he said everything was normal but there is white blood cells in my urine.  There is no way it could be an STD.  I can't stand this discharge.  I can't wear a bathing suit for very long as the discharge is to heavy and having sex with my husband is embarassing and messy.  I am 32 and I think I would know what is normal for my body and this isn't but my doctor seems to think it is normal.  Does anyone have any ideas what it might be?  Please help

Ok this is the second time i've had this happen to me. Here's my current issues. I must have a longer urethra than most people because (yes I did research)  I can't find a single picture that shows anything similar to what I have. But anyways, It's swollen, horribly swollen (very uncomfortable). I have severe itching and burning. And this ungodly amount of pain when I urinate that I want to scream it hurts so bad. I also have this discharge that's thick and looks like mucus, has a slight oder but not real strong. I don't know what to do. I've gone to the doctor but by the time I get there the swelling is gone and they tell me the discharge is normal. How can any of this be normal??? This started in Dec '10, this is the second time i've gotten this swollen and it's painful and highly uncomfortable. Can anybody help me??
