It could be bacterial vaginosis (BV) also known as gardnerella, which is very common and is distinguished by a noticeable smell. You'd need to be checked by your gyno for a definite diagnosis.
I would stop using the feminine wash, especially if you have an infection. A lot of women are very sensitive down there and using feminine washes may only make the problem worse. See a doctor if it doesn't go away.
Feminine washes can actually cause bacterial vaginosis. I agree, stop douching and go to the doctor.
I had that this past summer and I agree with you the smell is embarrasing but I don't know if other people can smell it but you. Anyway, the doctor said it was an infection and he prescribed flagyl which is an antibiotic and it worked great.
