Cotton panties definitely help. Non cotton panties can trap bacteria easier and make it more difficult for your genital area to breath. Wear cotton panties, drink lots of water and make sure you are wiping front to back not back to front. There are a few good ways to prevent them or at least help prevent them. Eating yogurt helps because it has active cultures in it. Also, eating garlic is supposed to help and drink cranberry juice. I personally cannot stand straight cranberry juice so I drink Cran-Apple or Cran-Grape (make sure it's 100% juice or you're just drinking sugar...ew!).

As far as I am aware, yes, you can treat a yeast infection while on your period but you have to wear pads instead of tampons. I've never personally had a yeast infection while on my period but I've known others who have successfully treated them while on their periods.

First of all you shouldn't be embarrassed to go to the doctor. Knowing how your body works and what to do is very important so I would suggest setting up an appointment with an OBGYN just to get things checked out if you haven't.

Second of all, an answer to you question is yes, there is something you can take to make it go away. Well, it works most of the time. There are over the counter yeast infection medications that you can get at any drug store, Target...I believe even grocery stores carry them! I would try the 3 day+ Monistat (or a like brand)...Ive never had luck with the 1 day brand.

Like I said, don't be embarrassed, your doctor has seen it all and a yeast infection isn't going to scare him. Please, if you don't do it regularly, get in to see your obgyn just for your regular, yearly check up. Especially if you're sexually active or older then 16.
