Provera Question

Hello- I was prescribed Provera 10 mg to induce my period. Its been almost 5 days since I took my last Provera pill and still no period. For those of you that have taken Provera- how long did it take for your periods to start? I am starting to worry so I took a pregancy test and there was an EVER SO SLIGHT second line. It really depended on how you held it up to the light though. I took another one immediately after and there was no second line. I'm scared to death that I might have gotten pregnant before I started taking the Provera and that taking it could cause birth defects. Has anyone had any expereince with this? I'm sorry for all the questions but would appreciate any advice you could give!

Hi I saw your post about the cleft palate. I was told way back in 1984 when stationed with hubby in Germany that I had an ovarian cyst. Dr. gave me Provera and at the time, not many studies were done. Soon after I found out I was actually pregnate. I was admitted into Wurzburg Army Medical Hospital...and 2 months later I had a baby girl who also has a cleft palate. At the time I was told there was a bit of concern about limb defects......has there been any lawsuits for this? My daughter also has a problem with her kidney, but not sure if its related...Thanks

I noticed this topic online and wanted to share.  My mother took Provera to prevent miscarriage in in 1974.  I was born with a club foot on my left side.  I found out in my 30's that I am missing my left kidney, ovary, and the left side of my uterus is underdeveloped.  I did have a daughter nine years ago, but delivered c-section b/c she was breech.  There was a class action lawsuit againt the makers of Provera shortly after I was born regarding birth defects that involved underdevelopment of one side of the body.  It is difficult to prove what causes birth defects, however there are stories like mine.

If you found out that you're pregnant after already being on the pill, does that mean that you did not get a period after taking the medication?  In other word, is it true that if you get a provera induced period, there is no way you're pregnant?

I finished taking Provera two weeks ago and still no period.  I took preg test, came back -....called RE, she told me to come in next week if it hadn't started by Tuesday .  Said it might be scar tissue from hysteroscopic surgery I recently had.....So if you haven't started AF yet, I would contact your doc......good luck!

I took 10mg Provera for 10 days starting on 8/20 to enduce my period.  Doctor took pregnancy test prior to starting medication, and it came up negative.  Last week, I had a positive pregnancy test, and today (9/19) found out I'm 6 wks along.  I know there is a chance of birth defects... Do I need to worry since I only took the pill for 10 days??

I have had a history of crazy periods.   Any extra stress and bye bye it went.   My last period was July 18th.   I have take 2 home tests ( 5 and 10 days past period due date) and both were negative.   Ultrasound showed that my fibroid tumor is larger than it has been.   My OB/GYN is concerned, but according to my blood work and ultrasound there were no signs of pregnancy or ovulation.  She said during my follow up exam on 8/28 that my right ovary was inflammed.   I about came off the table during the exam.   She put me on Provera to start my period~ 10 mg for 5 days.   That ended on 9/1/7.  I still haven't gotten my period.   One of my best friends is an OB/GYN Labor & Delivery Nurse.   She suggested ectopic pregnancy, hormone build up in falopian tubes, or a lower GI issue ( I had food poisoning in early July that lasted two weeks to fully run it's course).  I have no signs of pregnancy.   My right lower abdomen is sore and becomes more painful to touch.  Any other suggestions?   Work and Wedding Plans and a Bridemaid-zilla have been a cause of extreme stress.   Help!!!

I would say that since the second test turned up negative, the 1st was probably an evaporation line.

I do not mean to scare you, but I think it is important to note, that there is a reason that they stopped using medroxyprogesterone as a pregnancy test... one because there are faster ways, now... and secondly, because it can cause birth defects when taken early in pregnancy (specifically to the genital area).  Given how little time you have been taking it, though, I would say that risk is very minimal, even if you are pregnant.

Also, I agree with the above posters, you will probably not start your period until after you have taken your last pill.

Good luck!

Here's a link from when the Maternal child forum was answered by physicians:

http://www.medhelp.org/forums/Maternal/archive/2367.html

also:

Provera has been both inadvertantly and purposefully given to pregnant women for many, many years in the past.  There is a theoretical risk of masculinazation of the fetus.  In clinical use, this has not proven to be the case.  Because it is given to women with amenorrhea, some of them will occasionally be pregnant despite testing.
Provera withdrawal in the past was also not terribly effective as a means of pregnancy testing, sometimes you will not have a withdrawal bleed if your body is not producing enough estrogen.  Better means of testing have come along to replace Provera withdrawal, so it is unnecessary now to take any risk at all.

The original poster will be fine.  She's had a negative pregnancy test.

Taken from the insert (provided bt Pfizer) for Provera:

Progesterone or progesterone-like drugs have been
used to prevent miscarriage in the first few months of
pregnancy. No adequate evidence is available to show
that they are effective for this purpose. Furthermore,
most cases of early miscarriage are due to causes
which could not be helped by these drugs.
There is an increased risk of minor birth defects in
children whose mothers take this drug during the first 4
months of pregnancy. Several reports suggest an association
between mothers who take these drugs in the
first trimester of pregnancy and genital abnormalities in
male and female babies. The risk to the male baby is
the possibility of being born with a condition in which the
opening of the penis is on the underside rather than the
tip of the penis (hypospadias). Hypospadias occurs in
about 5 to 8 per 1,000 male births and is about doubled
with exposure to these drugs. There is not enough information
to quantify the risk to exposed female fetuses,
but enlargement of the clitoris and fusion of the labia
may occur, although rarely.

Therefore, since drugs of this type may induce mild
masculinization of the external genitalia of the female
fetus, as well as hypospadias in the male fetus, it is wise
to avoid using the drug during the first trimester of pregnancy.

These drugs have been used as a test for pregnancy
but such use is no longer considered safe because of
possible damage to a developing baby. Also, more rapid
methods for testing for pregnancy are now available.
If you take PROVERA and later find you were pregnant
when you took it, be sure to discuss this with your
doctor as soon as possible.

You will be fine if you were pregnant before taking provera.  If you dont get a period withing 5-10 days of taking your last pill call your Dr and see if you can get a blood test done.  The above poster is right, it use to be used as a pregnancy test.  I got pregnant right after taking provera and it scared me that the drug was in my system but everythings fine.  Best of Luck, hope you get your BFP soon!!!!!!!!

You'll be fine even if you were pregnant when you took the Provera.  Years ago, they used it as a crude pregnancy test, if u didn't bleed after using it, you might be pregnant.
But usually you will have a period 5-10 days after taking the last pill.  So don't worry yet.
