Xanax and Infertility
I have been married for 4 years now and with my husband for 8 years. We have not concieved yet, we are trying and i am even working with an ovulaton calendar and tracking my fertile days yet still no pregnancy. I have 1 major issue that lingers on my mind. Could it be the Xanax my doctor prescribed me for anxiety? My sister is a nurse and tells me that Xanax could cause infertility if taken for a long term medication. I have and am currently taking Xanax .5 mg 4 times a day. For about 5 years now. Could longterm use of Xanax cause a woman to have problems concieving ?
Saw ur post re: Xanax and preg! May I ask u... Even if taking .5 mg as needed.... While trying to get preg or being preg...won't this harm the baby?? It's a class d drug for pregnancy :( I take this, .5 as needed for epilepsy and anxiety... Used to have to be on 4 mg a day!
I have been taking xanax.for a little over 10 years now....it rashly does grab ahold of you....I fear trying to get off it when I try to have a baby :(
Actually I heard many times that you can cut cold turkey AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT TAKE XANAX OFTEN. For instance I take 0.5 only when needed. Once every 2 weeks and max 3 times a week... I rarely take it the following day of my recent dosage.
Is this true for people like me that don't take it often to be okay with fertility? I would definitly stop when I find out im pregnant especially since I know I wont go through withdrawels since I am able to go days or weeks without it already. Just worried about it affecting my fertility.... thats all

yes , i am on xanax for panic/anxiety disorder. i am doing the wing down now to get off.just a funny thing i wanna share. my husband watched a show on tv and he said he's never drinking mountain dew again because it causes a man to be sterile, can u believe that?i'm blown away by something new everyday! i think i gave him baby fever and he choses to not wear underwear now to "let the boys get some air". i wonder if that'll work?
I AGREE WITH MARYHEATHER.....YOU MUST NOT STOP COLD TURKEY.......i DID AND I COULD NOT FUNCTION. I HAD TO GO BACK ON THEM AND TAPER WHICH STILL TOOK ME FOREVER TO GET OFF. i THINK THAT YOU SHOULD DO THIS PRIOR TO EVEN TRYING TO BECOME PREGNANT.gOOD LUCK.
I agree with the above posters...you need to do a step down program instead of stopping when you are pregnant. If you are TTC you are most likely not going to know exactly when you become pregnant, most likely you will know when you have missed AF. Therefore to avoid the fetus from being exposed to the meds you need to get off them before you TTC. That way no harm is done to you or the baby. Check out safefetus.com drugs and OTC the the FDA has done tests on with pregnancy and effects. Best of Luck!!
Your doc can put you on a step-down schedule. For instance, cut you back to taking it 3 times a day for a couple of weeks, then 2, etc. You probably don't want to have to worry about stopping the xanax cold turkey while dealing with pregnancy hormones. Talk to your doc about it, and good luck.

You MUST step down when coming off of Benzo's. If you don't, there are side effects to that also. Never, never try to come off cold turkey, or without a doctor's advice. You need to find a doctor who is knowledgable about benzo. withdrawal symptoms, and the best way to avoid them. Step down is the only way to come off---Good luck!

i agree you must wean off benzos-before getting pregnant-dont wait until you are-you can and very likely will have seizures if you stop cold turkey-you ned to talk to your dr about this-and have you received any therapy-i assume you are on xanax for anxiety
Thank you for your replies. I Would stop the usage of xanax if ever i did become pregnant. If Xanax isn't the cause of my infertility, it just keeps my mind wondering what is. I don't think i'll have a hard time coming off of xanax but i've heard so many stories that it is scary. It makes me wish it was never prescribed to me.
FYI--Benzodiazepines (xanax, klonopin, etc.) are very addicting, and you should not take them while pregnant. You can google the word "xanax" and find out all you could ever want to know just by locating the website of the manufacturer. All of the side-effects/contraindications are listed. Not to scare you by any means, but that is a very difficult drug to come off of, and it is often passed off by doctors as a "safe" drug. Benzo's are a very serious class of meds, and you should weigh the risk/benefit ratio before continuing them. As for infertility, I don't know, but your pharmacist, or OB should. If not, seek a second opinion.
I work in a pharmacy I have not heard that xanax will cause ifertility however you need to get off the meds if you are TTC. You dont want a baby going threw withdrawls and possible birth defects. do you plan on stopping the Xanax when you get pregnant? If so I would recommend doing it before so. I was taking .5 milligrams 2 times a day for a few montsh and it took me almost a year to get off of it. It was horrible. That stuff is so addicting. Trust me.....being pregnant and trying to stop at the same time is not a combo you want. You are not suppose to stop cold turkey as i did once and i could not even function. From what i have read babies born to moms who take it can go through withdrawels from it after they are born but as always you have to weigh your options. Best of luck to you!
