Lucid dreams

I had lucid dreams (when you know, in the dream, that you are dreaming) But as soon as I do realize that it kind of gives me a shock, and I wake up! So I have no idea where this realization could lead. I've heard that lucid dreaming can be used to help solve problems in life, and give Spiritual direction. Also I don't seem to be able to do this at will. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I am so excited to find this group..  All of my life I have been a big time dreamer. I have 'lucid' dreams..I didn't know these dreams had a name until today!! I dream every single night. I also dream for it seems like, hours. Some dreams are not as intense as others but then there are the "dreams". These dreams frighten me sometimes. They range from UFO sightings to me witnessing a plane crash, and then a day or so later an actual plane will crash somewhere in the U.S.  I dream of my deceased brother but he is always alive and he is not sick in my dream. I dream of my deceased grandmother also. Then sometimes I dream scary dreams. But, last night I dreamt that I left my job to run an errand and woke up in a van in a nearby town. I called someone I know at my job and she said I had been missing for over a month. I had clothes on that didn't belong to me. I kept telling my friend on the phone that I had just left work. She insisted that I had been replaced at work because I had been gone for so long. No one could find me. I had just disappeared:/

I do not know what that dream meant but I do believe it had a meaning especially for me. Since I am Bipolar I wonder if I am deep down afraid of losing myself to this crazy disease?

Yes it's tricky to try and understand what dreams really mean. I think there are different levels of dreams. Those with deep Spiritual meaning, those which are kind of 'psychic', those which are our subconscious warning or enlightening us about something, dreams where we are learning, dreams where we are acting out our anxieties, or wishes, those where we are re-playing events from the previous day in a kind of jumbled-up fashion, and those dreams when the body's balance is a little upset (such as the ones we get when we have indigestion or need to pee, etc)

But because most of the time they are surreal, and we don't normally THINK in a surreal way, we find hard to understand them.
It's interesting to imagine the "dreaming-self" as a young child that can't use ordinary adult language, but paints pictures to convey what they mean.

I thought this group was interesting,  because I have a lot of very interesting dreams, most of which are too long to type out on here. Most are crazy and don't really have any meaning that I can decipher, but sometimes can find meaning out of them, or at least relate them somewhat to real life situations I am going through.
One such dream that was kind of crazy but could relate somewhat to (picking out one of my short ones)
I was visiting my Grandparents in their new apartment that they are moving to in two weeks (they are both in their 80's and lost their beloved dog a year ago..Brutally, she got caught in a seatbelt when they were in a store, and her windpipe was crushed..They had her since she was four days old. Anyways, they made a point of mentioning that they aren't allowed dogs or cats in this new apartment, as my brother and I both have two dogs.)
So in this dream as I was visiting, along came this animal that had a head of a bird with a huge beak, and the body of a terrier dog. It also had wings like a gryphon. I said I thought you werent allowed animals in the apartment? She answered me, "Well, were not allowed dogs or cats, so I got this instead. He is my baby". SO I'm sitting there eyeing up this weird animal, when it fly's over to me and starts picking at my arm's and back. I asked her what it was doing, as it was hurting me. She answered that it likes to pick peoples pimples for a snack..
So anyways, you can see how my dreams are pretty weird..That's one of the less crazy ones..I think I got the pimple part, because my hubby has this OCD. He enjoys holding me down and picking at my pimples. He had just been doing that the night before, lol.

Wow! You are doing so much dreaming. That's interesting. Science tells us that the sleep pattern is a certain way....that we (adults)have so much stage 1 sleep...so much stage2...so much REM....etc. But that is not always necessarily so.
Once I had a dream that went on continuously, from about 1am till about 6am. I know that because I kept waking up from it, checking the time, then going back into the same dream! That happened once years ago, and hasn't happened since.

You must have a great deal of REM sleep. That's interesting. But I'm not sure what that means.
Generally I find the more dreams I recall in the morning, the fitter and better I feel that day. Although dream recall I think is associated with shallower sleep (?)

To ginger... that story about the bee is awesome! I love stories like that.

A little over 25 years ago, I remember seeing a white butterfly fluttering about in my backyard. And, I distinctly remember thinking (half seriously) to myself... "hey, God, why don't you send that butterfly on over to me." In truth, I expected nothing to happen; but, to my surprise, that butterfly flew right to me and perched itself on my left shoulder. The experience was beautiful in it's simplicity.
Ever since then, I've felt a connection with God that I've never found with formal religion. And, to this day, I have an affinity with the butterfly (which by the way, is symbolic of the eternal soul).

To riley... Welcome. Dream on and share your dreams here, with us... that is to say, the few of us who are here.

I've always had a strong fondness for bees, and some interesting and strange (very strange) experiences with them.

Listen to this (this is true, I haven't embellished the story, it's exactly as it happened)

My husband once had a bitter on-going argument with a neighbour, a man who owned the Orchard across from us. This feud went on a long time.
One day, upset by all this, I was in the garden, and nearly crying, and a honey bee hovered over me, keeping close to me. I asked the bee to help (would you believe that?) I asked it to help the situation between us all. AND I asked for a "sign". It flew away.

About a week or so later, my husband was late home. When he came back I asked him what had happened that he should be so late. He said he had met the neighbour in town, and they had patched up their feud! The man had invited my husband for coffee, saying they were both too old to be behaving like that.
My husband said he had been invited to the man's house for tea the next day.

Next day came, and he went to tea. He was there for ages, but when he came back he had a jar of honey, which the man had given him. Apparently, the neighbour kept bees! (neither of us knew that) -he said "Some of this honey was likely made from the nectar from the flowers in your garden"

... bees typically symbolize productivity. It can also bring to focus the "sweetness of life," ... maybe, not enough?
And, flying... that always signifies liberation, freedom from constraints and a willingness to face challenges.
Interesting, but not surprising that you trusted and followed the lead of the bee and found that opening... nobody likes being forgotten, left behind or feel trapped (mentally, emotionally or physically).
Having the ability to fly... the freedom to find our way... is sweet, indeed!

I've had MANY lucid dreams over the years. Most times as soon as I realize I'm dreaming, I wake up. But once or twice, theat realization just led on further into a 'strange' kind of dream-state.
Once I was dreaming of a closed window, and I saw a honey bee flying. As soon as I saw the bee, I realized I was dreaming. The bee found a hole in the corner of the window, and started to fly through it. I watched (fully conscious in the dream-state by then) the hole widened, and I thought "Let's see if I can fly through too, and follow the bee"
It flew on, and I noticed I was in a very large school sports hall, kind of 'hovering' about 15 feet in the air. I started to descend.
Then I got scared. I remembered it was Saturday morning very early, and I was afraid of being locked in there until Monday morning!! How about that?
(Obviously didn't figure out that I could just get out of there any time I wanted!) ha ha!

One of the concepts behind lucid dreaming is that if you're aware that you're dreaming... while in the dream state; then, that translates into an ability to control your life. I don't know if I would entirely agree with that... but, I can't refute it either
as I've only had one lucid dream, 23 years ago.
What I do believe is that one gains invaluable and evocative insights about one's self though dream analysis.
Dreams, according to Carl Gustaf Jung, are the "contents of the collective unconscious." And, through objective analysis of them, we come to understand ourselves.
I see dreams as psychological "vents" and are an essential means to process our thoughts, feelings, emotions and anxieties in a way that we aren't able to do in our day-to-day conscious, waking state. In my opinion, if we didn't have dreams as our mental escape valves, I think that we may all go crazy!
And, anyone who says that they don't dream, probably doesn't remember their dream... as dreams can be so convoluted and abstract, they're very easy to forget.
If you haven't already read it, I strongly recommend the book, "Lucid Dreaming" by Stephen LaBerge, PhD. I would also recommend reading the works of C.G. Jung, who was both a student of Freud and is considered to be the father of modern day Analytical Psychology.
By the way, I wold have answered here much sooner; but, I saw that there was no way to post a reply/ comment to a posted question... that is to say, up until now!
