8cm cyst found on ovary during ulstrasound...should i be worried..cos i am!

I went in for a upper ab scan cos i have stomach pains every now and then which i associate to being more and more sensitive to foods...ulstrasound lady said she will just scan the bowel area and check for thick walls...she saw the ovary and said "oh u have a cyst..rather large..8cm"..i said is it dangerous- she said doesn't look like it and cancerous cysts take on a different appearance.  I said is it common and she was umming and ahhing and said its not too uncommon....

then at the end i asked again if she thought it was bad and she said she can't say anything as she is just the person taking the ultrasound and i hvae to talk to my doctor and probably get a referral to take it out. She said but i did already tell you what it looks like and that it doesn't look dangerous...

so how worried should i be?? cos i just sat in my car crying for 5mins hehehe (cos i stress easily) and am googling like crazy (which is good and bad)......

sigh. doctor on tuesday.

Hi all!

I was diagnosed with an 8 cm dermoid on my right ovary and dr told me it has to be removed via laparotomy.  I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow and I am scared.  What are the chances of saving my ovary and tube if any?  What is the recovery time and how difficult is it?

Thank you

Remember, 99% of any cysts are benign.... Though annoying, they aren't dangerous as long as you get them taken care of. Go see your gyn, and they'll give you the best course of treatment. You will probably do the watch and wait while taking oral birth control, and then they will go from there.
No use stressing yet, until they know what it is, and how they want to take care of it.
Breathe, *hug*, and keep in touch!

Most commonly, when cysts do become malignant, the cancer is contained in either solid components in the cyst or in thick cyst walls.  Your cyst possibly has no true solid components and very thin walls, and thus the tech would state that there are no obvious signs of cancer.

HOWEVER, this does not mean that you can stop the search for answers.  Do have proper follow-ups, and if the doctor believes that you need surgery then take that action.  There is some belief in the medical community that even benign structures (cysts, tumors), with enough time, can turn cancerous.

Hi, I know with the internet at your fingertips, it's hard not to google these things, but try not to look at those images because it just scares you worse! I know, because I am a complusive googler when it comes to these things ;)

I had an 8-9 cm cyst when I was pregnant and it was found at my 8 week ultrasound. By my 20 week ultrasound it was gone. I never knew it was there and I didn't know it when it went away. I think I have another one now and this one I feel. We'll find out next Wed. Good luck to you and try not to worry too much!!

Of course you are worried - who wouldn't be???  But like Kasie already told you - the chances are that this will turn out to be no big deal so try not to freak out (too much!!!).  Googling is a good and bad thing but in the end you won't find out a whole lot because the symmptoms of "something" and the symptoms of "nothing" are kind of the same.  So just try to stay busy - enjoy your life and don't let this control you (I know - easier said than done but pretty much every one of us here have been where you are~).   Sounds like you have already freaked out - so when you start to freak out again tell yourself "I already freaked out about this so I don't need to do it again~".  God bless~ Deb

ITs with my doctor and then she has to apparently refer me to a gyn.....u know what ... im so glad i pushed for the ultrasound- even if it was for different reasons... initially i had gone to another doc with the stomach probs and asked if i could have one cos well to be honest, I'm paranoid and just wanted to get that out of the way. she refused and said she would just give me a blood test and urine test as well as a general 'touch and does it hurt here' consult....i was annoyed but figured that since she wasn't worried i'll just leave it....this time with this doc he was probably TOO easy with it. he was just like- oh ok do u want to check ure ovaries- u probably don't need to etc....

sometimes i really worry about the doctors i go see hehehe.... yes im new here...meet me- the worrier....paranoid about everything.... :D

let me tell u- googling about this cyst and going into websites WITH images is NOT good for u!~ heheh im ok now... just wait and see.....will keep u posted :)

I know it is easy to say don't worry, cuz if the truth is told, we all worried when we were faced with the same thing you are.  Please be assured that 99% of all ovarian cysts are benign.  I am glad that you have an appointment on Tuesday.  Is it with your gyn?  Good luck, and keep us posted.  Kasie

Hi don't worry. When I found out I had a 7.5 x 4.5 dermoid cyst and i might need surgery I didn't flip out but when I found out that I needed surgery - I sat on my lunch break in my car crying hysterically for 30 min. Don't worry. Wait to see what your doc tells you.
I'm scheduled for surgery 6/22.
Don't worry - you're not the only one =)
