What is the best thing for pain now???

I have a really bad wisdom toothache.  I lost the filling awhile back and of course now it's flared up.  I am waiting for a cancellation so I can get into the dentist but the pain is horrible.  My dentist phoned in a script for Tylenol 3 and I took one which did give a little relief but also upset my stomach and there is codeine in them so I know I shouldn't take them.  Is there anything really effective for pain that is safe to take?  Even if I need a perscription for it, it's okay.  I just don't know what to ask for and don't want to have to tell my story to my dentist right now.

It's hard to deal with all the mess you have created without taking pills.
Reality ***** sometimes and my instinct is to hide behind it by medicating myself.  I know that's not the answer because it wasn't working anyway.  I was more depressed taking the pills than I am now.  I just want to feel good and move on with my life.  I am working on the feeling good part naturally.  It's going to take me longer than other people I guess.  I know pills aren't the answer and I have had some really good days.

I am in the same boat as you, I didn't realize how much of life I ignored until now. Now I want to fix everything all at once and thats not gonna happen.  All we can do now is not look back & keep moving forward.  :)

No, I think my dentist is paying me back for all the appointments I cancelled when I was taking pills.  They say I have to phone in every morning at 8am and if they get a cancellation that day, they will call me.
The pain has really subsided today.  I can handle this.  Mind you, I haven't eaten anything yet so it may flare up once I do but I will be careful.
No appointment yet today.  I may have to go to another dentist if it gets bad but mine has all the xrays of it and I don't want to have to pay for a new set.
I was supposed to get it taken care of awhile ago but my pills were more important.  I couldn't afford both and pills came first.  I think I am going to have to get used to paying for alot of things I ignored while using pills.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.  I guess there's no easy way out.

Ugh, Pat, sorry to hear about the dental pain. Like Akita, I took an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic. I also used Ambesol and iced it. Mine was infected so the only way the pain was going to stop was to get rid of the infection itself. I hope you get in to see your dentist soon.

They should have emergency appointments at your dentist. If they know how bad you are hurting they will find a way to get you in, or at least they better damnit. lol I have your back. I am sorry you are hurtiing. Hang in there and a little more time and this will be behind you. You are fkn strong you CAN do this!!!

Hi, when I had tooth problems, I actually found that the pain pills did nothing for it.  Instead it was the penicillin that helped because it got rid of any infection.  I'm not sure if that is what is going on with you, but it could be worth a shot if you can't get into the dentist right away.

Torodol is an anti-inflammatory that works extremely well.  They use it alot for kidney stones and other moderate to severe pain

Advil can work well for tooth pain as it also helps as an anti inflammatory. Or Mortin. Good luck.  Tooth pain is no fun!
