Anyone have high blood pressure after stopping narcotics?

Just curious if anyone else has had this problem? I did have high BP when I was pregnant with both children and afterwards. Once I was injured and started on the pain meds, my BP slowly went down and stayed at a very good rate for the whole time I was on the meds. I understand that pain makes the BP rise and so does withdrawal, but I'm well past that stage. I'm 95 days off methadone so I really don't think that should still be a factor here, maybe I'm wrong though? I was put on Clonidine early in withdrawal and have had to stay on it because my BP even with the Clonidine is still staying at about 130/90...but at my last appt I told my doctor I want off everything...and that I wanted to taper off the Clonidine. My dose was cut in half and I've been thinking maybe this is why I haven't felt so great the last few days? Today is better than the last couple though, so I'll take that gladly, but I can't help but wonder? I'm sure I probably need to have my BP checked to see where I'm at now that my dose has been dropped for about 10 days, which I will do that sometime in the next couple days when I can get to a pharmacy that has a self-check machine....but for now I'm just curious if anyone else that has been off pain meds for awhile has had this issue?

My hubby thinks that the methadone had me so relaxed all the time that it kept my BP down and that I have inherited the high BP from my family since I do have lots of family members with high BP. Grrr...I just don't know!

I heard back from him earlier and he said that my BP was awful high and told me to "rest and calm myself for 3-4hrs"...and if I felt the same to bump my dose back up to two a day...which is what I ended up doing a little while ago...so hopefully I'll feel better in the next day or so. And I do ok with sleep...I do take Trazodone for that though but started the weaning on that one a couple weeks ago and am still doing good so I'm thinking THAT one will be the next one to go instead of the BP med. lol. And yep...I'm catching up :) Look out!! Lol.

Maybe I should clarify a little...last Monday I went to take my BP med and realized I only had one dose left...so I thought "Now might be a good time to stop them"...by Tuesday I felt like hell so I called the doc and he had me come in...up until then, my BP was running 130/70...but when I went in Tuesday it was 130/90 so he said I couldn't just stop taking it, that I should wean off so he cut my dose. Clonidine stays in your system about 5 days so I realized that I have had a rough week because the drop in dose was just starting to hit me over the weekend. Now that I am down to one dose a day instead of two, its went up to 160/96...does that even make sense? Lol. My head is aching and I feel like I can't thing straight. Lol.

With your readings you shouldn't have any problems getting your BP under control with one of the common BP meds available.

My BP spiked when I came off of Hydro. Then it went down to what is normal for me after a couple months. But then I'm also on 2 different types of BP meds. They're fairly inexpensive and control my BP very well. At 66 I exercise every day and my weight is fairly good for my height. (But I'd LOVE to lose at least 10lbs so my windsurfing wetsuit won't make me look like Shamoo as our season starts. :-)

Hey Gnarly :) I'm currently on Clonidine for it...in the beginning of my taper, he put me on it to help with WD's and because my BP was starting to go up. Once I was off the methadone for awhile, and thru the WD's, he started monitoring my BP closely but it just didn't go down to my normal, but it was holding pretty steady at 130/70, so he kept me on it. I just so wanted to be done taking any kind of pills, ya know? So I asked if we could try weaning off it and he cut my dose in half...evidently it wasn't such a bright idea! Lol. Me and my ideas...geez...

Oh I'm doing ok Vickie...and I'll be fine, I just knew something was up because of the "whooshing" & ringing in my ears and I just haven't felt the same. I finally started feeling better awhile back and decided I wanted to try to wean off the Clonidine to see if I did ok...WTH was I thinkin anyway?? Lol. And it was like I backslid or something...I was feeling bad and my chest was tight so I knew there had to be something going on. I just hope they call today and don't make me wait...I might end up taking another blood pressure pill if they don't because it scares me being that high :( But one good thing, I'm relieved to know its just my BP! :)

Oh and I have yet to hear back from the dentist again about my obturator. They got the one in they had made last Wednesday and it was made wrong so they had to send out for another one. They said they put a rush on this one so it wouldn't be a full two weeks again so I'm hoping to hear from them today or tomorrow. It's still very uncomfortable and hurts at times but I'm getting used to it. So I'm doing somewhat ok with that now but I'm definitely anxious to get it taken care of! :)

I couldn't stand it anymore....I just don't feel right :( I went ahead and drive to town to Walgreens to have my blood pressure checked. Just got home and am waiting for the doctor to call back now. The pharmacist called him and faxed paperwork over to him on my BP check...it's 160/96. I guess that would explain why I've felt so crappy for the last week huh! And Vickie, one of these days....lol.

Hi Hey not to change the subject, but how is the mouth thing going on..Did you get the OB back yet?? Yes my mom is a tough cookie having half that tongue cut do to cancer..She is addicted to mac-n-cheese..She is just going nuts not being able to eat right..I took the bp med you are on for just two weeks after 25 days of h**l..I could only take it at night..Even with my anxiety shooting to the moon (benzo too) I would just knock out if I took in the day...Do you know any body that has a regular cuff and stethoscope?? Go to a Heath Clinic or something that will not charge you..Take it in both arms..
There is always a slight differences in the R and L..Or call the DR and have him call back..Let him know your concerns..OK  Hey when are you going to get on a computer so you can come in and share your experiences..You always are in hiding,,I miss you..I am backing off a bit..I like to go and check peoples profiles out and the pics...lol

Yes!  My BP got very high last year when my pain level increased.  I had surgery last summer and in the couple months after that it started going back down.  BUT then when I quit opiates on Dec. 1st it went right back up again and my doctor put me on Bystolic.  It made a difference within a month or so.  My dose was decreased and about 2 weeks ago my BP was perfect (first time in SO long!).  I am still on the med, but it's the lowest dose.  High BP does run in my family as well, so not sure how my doc will want to handle it.  In any case, I DO think that withdrawal can cause BP to rise; hopefully it will be temporary!  Good luck :))

Hey Vickie! I've missed you girl! Tell your momma I had a big helping of Staufers Mac n Cheese yesterday...I think of her every time I eat it now. Lol.

The BP thing just makes me so mad because I want everything to be perfect, ya know? Lol. Really though...I try to do right by myself, so I just don't understand why it's high. I'm definitely not overweight...I eat good things and I exercise on my AbLounge and go for walks daily (unless its raining of course)...I dont know what else I can do on my end to get it lowered! I didn't put 2 n 2 together until this morning about why I've not felt so great the last few days...I really do think its from cutting that dose in half. I don't wanna have high BP....boo hoo. Lol.

Did you have any problems prior to using or while you were using? Or has this just been since detox? This is so frustrating! I eat right, exercise and am at a very healthy weight. Just don't understand why it would be high :(

Hi sweetness..It one of your methadone-O buds...My BP did go back up after I stopped..It was a bit on the low side when I used not real bad..It was considered OK It takes awhile for the body to balance out..I am still balancing out from all the use.. I Do think you should talk to the DR..I do not like the BP machines at the stores..They seem to be a bit off..I carry my BP kit with me..Your BP is slightly on the high side..Both..It also could be the cutting back on the clonidine...It also has alot to do with stress or what kind of activity you are doing..It is not in the danger zone..but you should go to the DR..Get it taken from a good BP cup...95 days already..Great Job..You are just ticking away...lol
