Dutchessgolden

Hello!I have read some of your posts.I know you are in the medical field.I had a acl reconstructive surgery and meniscus clean up too.My ortho used an alograft from an cadaber.[sorry bad spelling].I had the surgery on feb 19 and i have healed well but now he says the new acl is too loose and i am starting to hyper extend again when i don't expect it.Now he wants to check my knee at the end of the month and probably use a graft off my patella.OUCH!Have you heard of these types of surgeries failing?I am on a workmans comp claim.what will they say do you think? Can they refuse another surgery?I'm not ready for this.Last time i got dependent on the oxy and i don't want to go through the withdrawals again but i will have to take them anyway. He said it will hurt pretty bad with the patella graft and the extra work of removing the alograft. This is a nightmare.I'm just glad my employer is so good to me.and understanding. If you have any input i would really be grateful .Thanx.God Bless Bruce

First understand your operation and that every procedure has advantages, disadvantages, and success rates. I'm sure your doctor has weighed the good against the bad, that's all we can do.

Also understand that if you can relieve your pain w/o opiates try to do this. You may be able to ask your doctor about stronger muscle ralaxants and NSAID's (but these are typically used in conjunction with opiates to manage pain) You DO NOT have to go through the withdrwal you did last time. When you are ready your doctor or yourself can wean you off safely and painlessly.

1.The patellar tendon is the structure on the front of your knee that connects the kneecap (patella) to the shin bone (tibia). The patellar tendon averages between 25 to 30 mm in width. When a patellar tendon graft is taken, the central 1/3 of the patellar tendon is removed (about 9 or 10 mm) along with a block of bone at the sites of attachment on the kneecap and tibia.

2. Advantages: Many surgeons prefer the patellar tendon graft because it closely resembles what needs reconstruction. The length of the patellar tendon is about the same as the ACL, and the bone ends of the graft can be placed in to the bone where the ACL attaches. This allows for "bone to bone" healing, something many surgeons consider to be stronger than any other healing method.

3.Disadvantages: When the patellar tendon graft is taken, a segment of bone is removed from the kneecap, and about 1/3 of the tendon is removed. There is a risk of patellar fracture or patellar tendon rupture following this surgery. Also, the most common problem following this surgery is pain on the front of the knee ("anterior knee pain"). In fact, patients sometimes say they have pain when kneeling, even years after the surgery.

Also keep in mind that Biochemical studies have shown that using your own tissue (autograph) is much stronger than allograph (cadaver tissue)
And that the disadvantages do not apply to every patient.

I believe he was asking you about bending your knee because there are some concerns post-op with the autograph. There are tons of studies going on all the time in every area you can think of and can't think of. One off the top od my head is at the  Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Tokyo  @ theTeishin Hospital.

HAHAHA! I know it's not funny when you're actually going through it but your post did make me laugh. Like I told Kimmieb (like 6 pages back now) I'm just so sick of seeing people getting screwed by their docs b/c everyone tries to make sure the patients aren't aware of the doc's liability. I know my husband and I are both guilty of it too I can't deny that- grunting and writing a script ( we ALL have our days right?) especially when you don't have your meds and just can't think straight for anything. Or you hear the same thing over and over and over and over and evryo single person thinks it's the end of the world. It really is to them, I know how it feels, I guess it's a little clearer b/c I've been on both sides. Or sometimes it's kind of like dealing with 2st graders, it really is the end of the world and a friendship if someone throws sand at them right? As an adult you know better but no matter how much you promise them that it won't matter in the end all they know is that..............IT"S THE END OF THE WORLD!! for the next 20minutes anyway. Have you tried seeing any specialists? I've only seen specialists since I was little and I haven't found that I have any trouble, they're not so much grunters as they are...."do you need refills on anything else today?"

PS- what do you mean rambling? I ramble in every single post! Really ramble! I rambled in this post here.

xoxo- D.
