I have this nail picking and chewing thing and my cuticles are terrible and they bleed.  I am not sure if it is nervousness or fear or just plain depression.  I feel your pain as I am constantly trying to hide my fingers by curling in a fist.  I think you may do this as a diversion from other life situations so this is my take hope that works.

I agree, i have been to many of the other forums here on medhelp, and never get any replies, nothing like here...Example--i have ezema and went to that one, then because of my heart, went to the heart forum , i think i had 2 replies, also went to the gynocology one, nothing...
which is sad, and i have gotten more info for my heart, back, skin etc, here.....
talz----maybe it more to do with you anxiety.....I hope you can find someone who can relate to you

hun, post any where you want.  i just think you'll find more people there who know about it, since it is a psychological disorder.

and it makes sense (and i believe i've heard) it's related to anxiety.  it's a distraction from the anxiousness... i really do think a good shrink could help ya out.

good luck...

Hi and welcome to the forum the reason why you do this is for the same reasons a cutter will cut themself. Many times its caused by depression and when the mental anguish is so bad you will pick at your fingers until it gets very sore and starts bleeding. Its a relief from the mental trama going on in your body.
May I ask do you suffer from severe depression?

hun, i think it's actually a psychological issue, even though the behavior feels "addictive."  i think it's actually more obsessive/compulsive...

honestly, i think either going to a mental health forum would help, and more so, talking to a psychiatrist about it. you want to keep your skin pretty!  and that will scar too.. and even more, you'll get to the cause of why you're doing it, and then it will hopefully free up alot more than just the manifestation of the picking.

and it IS common... good luck hun...

You will notice though that when you go to those forums, they don't answer. These people in here, ROCK! It is like a big freakin family that if you want in, come on in. They are great. Substance abusers are supposed to hang their heads in shame, maybe back in the day. Not now, they are the first ones out there that will help. I LOVE THEM ALL!

This is the substance abuse addiction forum. Try the Dermatology forum. They would have more knowledge about skin problems and possibly could direct you to a mental forum. (if that is related to the itching)
