intolerance to alcohol....sometimes

My boyfriend and I see one another only about once a week.  When together, we typically drink alcohol.  Sometimes he can drink quite a bit 6-8 drinks and be fine, but sometimes, he gets really drunk on half a drink, with blurred vision and dizziness.  Mentally he is aware and frustrated by what is happening, but physically he becomes a drunken wreck.  We have tried to trace this to what he has eaten or what he is drinking, but to no avail.  Has anyone heard of this before?

Lots of drugs are accentuated by alcohol. Any chance he's taking an opiate, sleeping pill, or benzo before drinking?
