cronic pain and/or withdrawal pain?

I got up to 120 mg of oxycontin three times a day and was able to drop it to ten mg three times a day without any problems. But at the ten mg level I must take it or my back pain will render me useless. I can't even sleep or get out of bed. Suicidal because of the pain level. If I was able to drop the dosage so easily, why is it that I'm stuck at 10 mg. My pain specialist is telling me that my pain is real and has little to do with withdrawal. What do I do?

Thank you all for your advice and info. It is amazing how many people have this problem Damned if you do and damned if you don't!
I will start an exercise program and massage therapy helps with all the damaged muscles in my back. Thank God for good drug plans.
Good luck everybody and I will post for changes or improvments.

I was in a terrible MVA in 1991 and have been in pain ever since. I lost my job because of my pain and  medication. I am on long term disability and hardly go out of the house. I too have been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. But I almost snapped my spine in half in an accident. Head on colision with an 18 wheeler with no seatbelts provided. I am lucky and unlucky to be alive. But what a price to pay !!

trying to go without narcotics is really the only way you will know how much they help or iff they help at all..I am also a chronic pain patient and am 49..i have degenerative disc disease/scoliosis and alot of back pain and tightness..i was at 80-100 mgs of hydro per day for pain...my pain ins and was no different really without them.....i have taken some long acting meds that do help the pain but neurontin, muscle relaxers, antinflamatories along with judicious heat and ice..a good exercise program have all helped my pain..i am now getting a series of injections every 2 weeks in different facets and see a big improvement... i do know it is hard to find a doctor that will be aggressive with treatment...here it is hard to find a doctor who would even think of prescribing the amount of oxy u were on each day...they r very frugal with pain meds here/got a bug and they did not even give me a cough syrup with codiene in it and i am about to cough my head off!  lol

I have NEVER gotten high on oxycontin. NEVER !!! I only have used it for pain control. True at the high doses you are kinda lethargic and want to sleep all the time, but there was never a "HIGH"

Is there something else your doctor can give you that will take care of the pain instead of the oxy? something non narcotic? That is a problem all of us chonic pain suffers must ask, do we want to live in constant pain or take narcotics for the rest of our life...only you can answer that question...at the dose you are now  taking is for pain control., 360 mgs a day is addiction...I take 60 mg 2 x day of oxy for my pain and can function quite well ..I was told the way you find out if you are depended or addicted ...do you take the medicine to relieve pain or for the high...to relieve pain you are depended., any one who take narcotics for any link of time will be depended on it....if you take it for the high, you are addicted and need to find another way to relieve your pain...take care. keep posting and reading thread...good luck my friend

Yes, my doctor and I think 30 mg's a day is reasonable. I too had serious sexual problems on the higher dose. I lost my fiance over this and I went into a deep depression. Add the pain on top of that and you are talking seriou trouble. I am finally getting help for the mental side of this mess and have started to feel better at the lower dose. I do not spend 18 hours a day in bed and my sexual function has finally come back to normal. But at 55 I just do not know if I can handle the side effects of the drug for another 25 years. I also don't think I can stand the pain for another 25 years.

That is up to u...are u asking should u get off the med?  30 mgs a day is not a high dose and if it is controlling ur pain and u stay put at the dose and do not abuse..then i would say yes it is reasonable...but 360 mgs a day is an addicts dose/or someone with a high tolerence/ and as a rule it is hard to stay at the smaller dose after delving into high doses like 360 mgs a day.....if u r an addict u will creep back up and only u know if u r..keep posting
