alcohol in breast milk a problem to baby's liver?

my daughter drinks heavily (at least a 6 pack nightly) and nurses
her baby, now he is a toddler of 2 yrs old and is still nursing. he has been exposed to this regiment for 2 years now. His last check up with peditrician showed elevated AST 100, ALP 266 and SGPT 148. and my daughter didnt tell the doctor she drinks and nurses, so the doctor is unaware.  the doctor retested a week later and the liver function was normal range. so since their was no other reasoning behind his high liver function, my daughter told doctor he had an illness for a week of vommiing frm a virus he picked up, (and actully he had been vommiting for a week only 5 days before he saw the doctor maybe form a virus of some kind?) so his liver function leves was attritbuted to a virus he might have picked up somewhere and then went away.  my question is specfic to liver problems in baby since birth to toddler years and being exposed to alcohol in the breast milk. can that be a cause for elevated liver functions tests? also if so, then isnt that the same as exposing the toddler's liver over and over to alcoholic breast milk, and in turn doing damage like an alcohlic does? couldnt he develop chronic hepatatis or cirrhois of the liver thru nursing high levels of alcohol? also my grandson doesnt have to go back for any other tests, isnt it unusal that he had the elevated tests, then they are normal a week later, and now to drop it entirely without any other tests witout retesting again  maybe in a few weeks? wouldnt that be the wise and cautious thing to do?

by the way i suppose there is a chance that the baby could be addicted to alcohol too, so you will deffinatly want to involve a dr. you don't want the baby to have withdrawl with out a dr involved...

i have no idea what all is involved but you will be very wise to get help for the life of that child...even if your daughter won't tell the dr...you have that responsibility now that you know about it...otherwise you are responsible too...and you don't want that...your grandchild needs you....

i would have to agree whole heartedly with thanbey here...this is such a scary situation...the poor baby!...please do what thanbey suggested...and/or please have her stop breast feeding immediatly...at age 2 it really isn't necessary anyway...if you feel you can't do the above perhaps you can take the child into your home and care for her properly until the mom gets alcohol treatment...

the childs well being is endangered in more than one way...to have an alcoholic parent is also no way to grow up...i know...it has hurt me to this day...i am 42 years old and it still hurts...my mom was an alcoholic...she died last year of cirrhosis...your daughter needs help too...seek out Alanon and AA, and treatment for her too...my prayers are with you...hope you let us know how the baby is doing after this...the baby  needs some tests to see how this has effected her and to let you know how to help her...

There is no question in my mind that child protective services should be involved in this case.

An alcoholic mother who breastfeeds is feeding her child alcohol mixed with the breast milk.

Her poor judgement, irresponsibility and lack of insight have contributed to this poor child's failure to thrive. If he does not get the proper nutrition, for just one thing, to mitigate this damage by the age of three, his chances of having normal brain function for the rest of his life is reduced. He likely will be learning impaired at minimum. His IQ can be compromised and his nervous system (due to lack of B vitamins from alcohol consumption) will be underdeveloped. He may already have fetal alcohol syndrome, but it is being made worse everyday this woman feeds him alcohol through the breastmilk.

This is not a matter of meddling. This child needs someone in his corner NOW. What on earth is the matter with his pediatrician?

Calling child protective services is just the beginning of what you need to do. Stay on top of this situation so that your daughter is not able to bamboozle the professionals in this case like she has bamboozled you for so long. You are the only one that can do that.

Save this child's life, please. You are the only one who is in a position to do so. I hope you will.

thanbey
