I go to therapy too. I would like to know of any support groups for people that have General Anxiety Disorder.
The best thing that works for my anxiety is a controlled breathing technique. You take a deep breath in through your nose, hold it for 5 seconds and count this out in your head, then let it all out through your mouth. Do this until your heartrate starts to come back down and your anxiety subsides.
I have done this successfully at the beginning of a panic attack and have been able to stop it. Then try to take your mind elsewhere by reading a book, exercising, etc.
I have been trying controlled breathing, but my control is still lacking, lol. Who knew breathing could be such an effort! I try it at night when I can't really being up and moving as much since everyone else is asleep.
Put your hands on your stomach when you are doing it. Concentrate on the rise and fall of your hands with each breath. Say to yourself "Up" and "Down" as you take your breaths. I know it is work and I know you are thinking what the hell, am I going to have to breathe like this for the rest of my life? The answer is no. The therapy will help you, the medication is going to help you, and you will be back to normal. I can't tell you how much I wanted to throw in the towel....I'm so glad I didn't and you shouldn't either. Take care.
