Feeling nervous about talking to higher ups

At work, why do I get nervous talking to my boss and even his boss? I'm nearly 50 years old and have always avoid these kinds of conversations.

Reading and analyzing all your ideas at least. I can say. i am undergoing an operation. from being nervous to being confident thanks for all your ideas. Big up to you all.

NOTE;
IrishSwag93, Smoking marijuana is not the solution at any level of fighting nervousness rather a destructive.

     What you do is:
      Imagine your boss Naked!

I think in a lot of cases, how our relationships with our parents was is how we perceive the rest of the people in cases of bosses or higher ups.

Once I started therapy and saw that my view was skewed by imagining
that all people resembled my 2 parents, I found it easier to talk to people
and even approach people without constantly being put down ahead of time in my own mind...

Good luck to you

I believe that is the right attitude to have.  They put on their pants one leg at a time just like us :).  I remember when I first wanted to talk to my commanding officer when I was a young captain in the army about when I started to first experience anxiety soon after returning from our second deployment. I was initially very nervous about admitting it to him because I regarded him in such high regard.  I remember discussing it with him and he basically told me to get over myself and get help...and they he handed me a pill bottle of Prozac that was prescribed to him.  He then asked me, "Do you think anything less of me now?  Go get help...it takes much more courage to admit you need help than to ignore it."

Talk about an eye opener for me.  Our bosses are just like us.  They have their issues and challenges like anyone else in society, so never look down on yourself for anything that you are confronting.  It takes a lot to do so and you deserve a big pat on the back for it in my opinion.

I can relate to how you feel. I use to get nervous talking to my boss and their boss, presentations too. As for my boss, once I got comfortable with him/her, my nervousness went away. But the bosses boss was another story. For one I didn't see him often so the opportunity to get comfortable never happened. For me the nervousness came from my insecurities about my own abilities to talk to someone who I felt was superior to me. Over time, I began to feel more confident in myself which in turn made me feel more comfortable in talking to the "higher ups". I wish I could tell you how, why or when it happened, I just don't know. I can tell you the confidence in myself is what made the difference. It just took time. If you tell yourself that these are just everyday people just like you and I, you may be less intimatated, less nervous around them. They are human just like us, their not more important than you. They have problems just like everyone else. When you look at them in this true light, you will find it easier to feel comfortable talking to them.

The important thing to tell yourself is that you are just as important as they are. You are equal individuals with different titles. Have faith and confidence in yourself and I really think your way of thinking, your nervousness, will gradually disappear. I am close to your age too and it worked out for me. It's never to late.
