Your concern is very legitiment. If you've read any other posts on here, you will see that many of them concern the problem of getting OFF these types of meds. BUT.......to answer your question, it IS very possible to be on a short course of these meds and then get off to see how you're doing. But you really need to do this under the guidance of someone who knows about these kinds of meds. Most PCP, GP's, etc, really have no business prescribing these sorts of medications. (In MY humble opinion) They just aren't trained enough in their use and, sadly, in the end, it is us, the patient, who must "clean up their mess!" I strongly suggest you see a psychiatrist. Since your anxiety/panic only began a short while ago, something "triggered" it...........if you can find the root cause of that by talking with someone it's highly possible you won't need medication at all.
And even if they DO put you on something, you CAN get off them! The only caveat here is that most benzo's require that you do a very slow taper to wean yourself off them. But done properly and under the supervision of someone who knows what they're doing, it can be a relatively painless porcedure and is really nothing to fear. Just as I said there were many stories of people trying to get off these meds, many of those stories are success stories. These are potent meds and not ones that you take lightly, but they can be incredible tools to help you through a crisis.
I wish you the very best and please feel free to ask as many quesitons as you'd like.
Peace
