Having worked in the disant past for a living as an airline pilot, I stand by my comments.

Death in an airplane crash is very real, and the timely evacuation of passengers does mean the difference between life and death. An passenger who is unconscious from sleeping pills does not belong on an airliner.

That is the doctrine of "the reasonable and prudent individual".

A passenger who takes sleeping pills endangers themselves and every other passenger on that flight. And indeed, in years gone by when I was engaged in that endeavor I did refuse boarding to passengers who took sleeping pills.

A physician who prescribed sleeping pills for use by a passenger does not have the maturity or jusgdement to be practicing medicine.

On the other hand, a mild anti-anxiety medication such as valium, is another story.

Insofar as the Airbus vs. the Boeing, the Airbus is a fundamentally different aircraft, and not as structurally strong as a Boeing. This saves weight and is compensated by a computerized flight limitations system, limiting angle of bank, rate of turn and climb. Most Boeings, on the other hand are capable of pulling more "G"s in an emergency and they are entirely under the control of the pilot.  The tail that came off the Airbus out of Kennedy when the pilot applied full rudder deflection some years back epitomized the shorfall of this engineering approach. The Airbus has an engine limitation system that prevents the pilot from advancing the power levers to extend engine overhaul time. On a Boeing you can pull full war emergency power, and those engines may have to be replaced on landing, but you will have that thrust available to clear an obstacle or abort a landing.

Hey Star, honestly, let's check numbers and statistics and there is more probability for you to stay on panic not having any anxiety medication than the plane crash... Please "caregiver" be realistic, your providing comments that can make help star to feel more insecure. Please stop telling "Lost" stories and get more real... Besides, this doesn't have to get an argue. Everybody is free to advice and the people who need the help is free to get whatever they think is the most convenient.

Sorry about this star, I think you should at least ask by phone a medical assistant about this and you'll get the right thing.

Blessings.

Therefore, i am not sure what i will react to it. But i am so nervous when i think about it. if there is a way, i will never try to be on it.

Thank you guys for your answer.

Congratulations! You have single-handedly created nothing but more angst and anxiety for folks who are already spooked.
I would like to get into this with you point by point, but it wouldn't do the original poster any good whatsoever.
And if YOU had your "druthers" the FAA would ban passengers who had taken a sleeping medication from boarding. And who exactly would you have in charge of checking this? Your jack-booted, SS flight attendants?
When the Airbus ditched in the Hudson, how do you know that not a single passenger on board was on a sleep aid? Are you privy to information the rest of didn't get?
Personally I believe that if there was an emergency on board a flight, the amount of adrenaline coursing through someones body would wipe out the effects of any sleeping pill.

"If it ain't Boeing, I ain't going."
Good thinking.......like a Boeing aircraft has NEVER crashed?
I'm going to the store now to buy another can of worms.

I would not take a sleeping pill.

While airline travel is safe, in the event of an emergency the difference between life-and-death is alertness and situational awareness. If I had my druthers the FAA would ban passengers who took sleeping medication before boarding.

A mild dose of valium would be acceptable.

The seats near the exits are the safest. Learn how to use the emergency exit.

Wear cotton slacks. And a long-sleeved cotton shirt. Those are most fire-resistant. Not polyester. And shoes. Do NOT wear bedroom slippers. Bedroom slippers are a recipe for death in the event of a crash.

In the event of an emergency the oxygen masks will drop. They will not activate unless you pull them DOWN. This is one of the reasons I do not like the suggestion to take a sleeping pill. If you are on a sleeping pill and the cabin experiences decompression you have a short window of opportunity to get that mask.

When the Airbus ditched in the Hudson River, you would have been toast if you were sound asleep thanx to medication.

Fly a well-known airline, and if you have a choice, avoid an Airbus.

Please understand that we cannot tell you to take any specific medication nor a specific dose. Only your doctor can prescribe for you. Talk to him/her about your anxiety and together you can decide on the level of sedation you may need.

Be sure and let your flight attendant know that you are a very anxious flyer. Trust me, they really appreciate knowing and you will be pleasantly surprised at just how compassionate and helpful they will be during the flight. It can also be helpful to let your seatmates know your nervous. If they are seasoned flyers, they can reassure you about all the noises an aircraft makes and explain about turbulence, if you should hit any.

Try to get a window seat, unless the fear of heights is part of your phobia. For me, I found the window seat greatly eased my sense of claustraphobia. 13 hours is a long flight, be sure and bring some comfortable, loose bedroom type slippers to wear during the flight. Sitting for that long can cause swelling, which isn't good. Also get up at least every two hours and take a walk around the plane.

Take along things to keep you busy and your mind occupied. Treat yourself to that book you've been meaning to read. Start that Christmas knitting project. I took Play Doh once on a long flight and I eventually had my whole row making animals for my farm!

Flights these days are notoriously cheap and chintzy with the snacks and meals, so do yourself a favor and pack yourself some good, light nutritious stuff to munch on. Pack gum for the take offs and landings.

Geez, all you asked was if you could take some Ativan and I wrote you a mini novel. Sorry!
Please talk to your doctor and I'm sure he will give you something to make the flight as comfrotable as possible for you.
I know what you're going through, I totally understand your fear, but you'll be just fine.
I hope you're going someplace wonderfrul and we expect a postcard! LOL
Bon Voyage!
Peace

This is not complicated, try to get a sleeping pill, take it approximately 15 minutes before get on the plain, once you're in the plain tell the stewardess to take care of you time to time, you will be sleeping during the trip, maybe not the whole 13 hours but at least the half of it, and the next 6 hours you're gonna be fine cause you will be relaxed by the effect of the pill, or you can even take 2 pills (the second 7 hours later) and stay sleeping during the whole trip... Get medical advice about this. Some people use to drink once in the plane to stay relaxed.

Blessings.
