Vitamin B12 and remylination

I have read some articles on B12 and how it has shown some evidence of remylination of damaged nerves/axons.

Is there anyone here who can comment on this and if there is good science behind this theory?

I have MS and RA and I take high doses of B12 and D3 but wondering if I am wasting my money on the B12.

Hi esoteric1967.

A very interesting review article "From fish to man: Understanding endogenous remyelination in CNS demyelinating diseases" is available online from  NIH Public Access documents by searching the title.
There are dozen of references, if you want to look further into the details.
Cheers!

Myelin needs specific nutrients to function properly:

Vitamin B1
Vitamin B9
Vitamin B12
Animal based omega 3 fat
Iodine

"In severe deficiency, there is actually a degeneration of the myelin shealth. The stuff begins to literally erode." - John Pinto, Ph.D on vitamin B12 deficiency.

Research shows that the active form of B12 (methylcobalamin) encourages nerve regeneration and regrowth of myelin. Recommended usage - 2000mcg daily.

Methylcobalamin increases Erk1/2 and Akt activities through the methylation cycle and promotes nerve regeneration in a rat sciatic nerve injury model - PMID: 20045411 - PubMed

Very interesting information for anyone with or without MS...
