Confused

If you have severe cervical foraminal stenosis, is it necessary for an operation to release the trapped nerves or will they still work if you leave them trapped?

Oh hun, I didn't tell u about my neurlogical issues to downplay yours!!!! *hugs* I just wanted to emphasize that my root nerves never worked entirely right the whole 11 months they were compressed. As of now? Well let's just say I'm waiting to see if the pain and weakness is here to stay forever, or just until the nerves rejuvenate as much as they will ever. After a year, if I'm still experiencing this, then I know I more than likely will the rest of my life. I can handle the weak legged walking if the pain disappears lol. I have. Carpal tunnel in both hands and having aches and pains in ur hands/arms is no fun as well!! Take care and keep me updated as to how u do!! *hugs*

Oh my!!! i'm so sorry. That's what you meant. That must have been very scary for you. How are you now? Gosh, that puts my snivelling to shame! I'll have to stop thinking about what could happen to me regarding my trapped nerves because they are obviously not too bad and lifes too short as they say.I'll plod on and see what happens. You take care and 'giant hugs back to you.

Paddy I never had numbness as part of my neurological issues. March 21st of last year at 11 am while at work one Saturday, my legs became "heavy and sluggish". Within an hour, I could no longer control the muscles in them, they were extremely weak. I walked like I had a bad case of cerapalsy. The charlie horses in my calves came on next, then the nerve damage excruciating pain came on. I wasn't able to move my left foot up or down at the ankle. It was dead. I couldn't control my "abnormal weak walk". Those were the issues I dealt with. I had to fight for almost a year to prove my symptoms were real b4 I could get this surgery. I don't know if my nerves will fully reguvenate, or if they are too damaged. I can only wait and hope. I hope u turn out ok as well!!!! *hugs*

Hi there; How you doing? Thanks for replying again, I appreciate it. I'm not doing too bad right now. I'm having problems with numbness in my fingers which I have noticed is getting more frequent and if I hold a book, my arms ache and I can't feel my fingers. Also when i wake up in the morning, quite often both my hands are so numb it takes a good 10 minutes for the feeling to come back and then my arms ache for a while after.

Squirtacious, you said you suffered from severe neurological deficits, would you describe my symptoms as the same. It's just that i've been told different things by the doctors and now i feel confused. The neurologist has told me that if my MRI was worse he would refer me to a Neurosurgeon, which the latest MRI has proved it to be. I was wondering if I need an operation to relieve the pressure on the nerves and if they were left would they 'die'. Will I have to put up with this numbness for the rest of my life or will they wait until i'm in too much pain and there is no alternative but to operate? I was told that having these neck problems was serious but I feel like no-one is explainig anything to me. I've tried to find out from the neurologist whether or not he is referring me but it has not been answered as  yet. The pain in my neck is not as excruciating as it was 6 months ago, but it's been there for years and I'm not half as active as I was a few years ago and cannot work anymore because of it.
Also I think I may have some problems with my lower back because that has also been giving me pain and just now it is really bad . I get like a burning pain in my feet on the top and it's there all the time. I've read that it is nerve related. What do you think. Thanks.

I have had my l5/s1 root nerves compressed for 11 months. I suffered from severe neurological deficits the entire 11 months. I received surgery feb 22nd of this year. I'm 9 weeks post op from  a one level fusion with instrumentation and still experiencing the same if not sumwhat worse depending on the day, neurological deficits in my legs. Its too soon to tell if the surgery has been a success. I'll answer that down the road lol. I just know the entire time they were trapped and compressed, I had neurological issues. Best of luck to u!!
