bulging disc

Hi i am a 30 year old female who has just spent a week in hospital and after an mri was told i had a bulging disc they were worried as i did suffer incontinence on 4 separate occasions and the pin test round the anal area was not right i could feel it but apparently the muscles were not reacting as they should , I have been give ibuprofen, diazepam and paracetamol to come home with and have been advised of complete bed rest and in 6 weeks time i will receive an appointment from a spinal surgeon , if the pain is just "niggling" then nothing will be done if it is still as bad as it is now i may be put forward for an operation , my question really is have i been advised right as reading online it seems bed rest is the worst thing to do yet i was told complete bed rest for this period of time , in the hospital i was not given any pt and it has not been mentioned since

Eve:
pt (PT) stands for physical therapy.

Oh, Jamie:
Yes, not PT. They don't want to risk increasing any damage or concerns related to potential Cauda Equina.

You don't say where the bulge is, but I suspect it is in the area of L5 or lower.
What you are describing sounds like Cauda Equina syndrome. (the horses tail of nerves at the end of the spine)
This can be a potentially serious issue, where the number one focus is to prevent permanent damage until surgery can relieve wherever the compression/restriction is.

Hi Jamie,

I have two questions for you. I'm guessing in order to have a referral for
an mri,, your family doctor gave you the referral . Is this right ?  Have you
ever discussed with your doctor how you came to have the bulging disc?
What do the letters pt stand for ?     Eve
