Irregular period

Ive been on BC for about 3 years (same time at night, every night) and have changed strengths a few times but my period is still irregular every month. Sometimes I don't get it at all for a few months because it is very light and I'm positive I am not pregnant.
Just because it's irregular, it's still preventing pregnancy, right?

Also, since it's irregular, I have sex with my boyfriend when I'm taking the placebos (because I don't have my period then usually.) Although I'm not taking the real pills, is it still working and I won't get pregnant?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there,
Irregular periods should be evaluated. Ovulation dysfunction and hormonal fluctuations can cause irregular periods. Regular periods are an indicator of fertility. Take a balanced diet and exercise daily. Reduce weight if you are overweight. Consult your gynecologist and get a checkup done. Treating the cause will enhance the chances of conceiving. For more details and assistance visit your gynecologist. Hope it helps.
Best wishes and regards!

I'm not worried that I'm irregular. I'm just wondering if my birth control still works even though I'm irregular?
