Hello - I had the Mirena removed yesterday (thank gosh).  A little background, I had it in for about 1 yr and during that time experienced, food intolerance (in a bad way), headaches severe, constant bloating and pressure in my stomach, dizziness, hair loss, cystic acne, fatique, ,chills, vomiting during my cycle, daily nausea that progressively got worse as I neared my cycle,  Anyways, went to my family doctor and had many tests done (not realizing it was the Mirena causing the problem).  They couldnt' figure out the problem, I work out 4 days a week, am a healthy weight for my size, eat healthy (I actually changed my eating habits to accomodate the fact that milk, bread, dairy no longer agreed with my stomach) and finally I went online and researched side effects of mirena and lo and behold - that was my problem.  I had it removed yesterday and no symptoms today (was sick, headache, yesterday) and it will take a few cycles to get all the 'Mirena' out of my system BUT my advice (as a non Doctor) is to wait a few cycles if you are trying to get pregnant to ensure that your hormone levels are some your own again.  As far as the string removal, you should have your doctor answer that but definately get it removed and/or replaced.  It seems that, given your symptoms, you need to decide if you can live with those symptoms in order to maintain birth control.  However, remember that a lot of times, the body will have symptoms because it's your bodies way of telling you it doesn't like the Mirena.  I know there are many people that love the Mirena and have no side effects but the fact is that some of us are unable to use the Mirena because the side effects are too much.  Good Luck!
