Architectural Distortion of Breast

In April, 2009, it was reported on a digital mammogram that I had possible architectural distortion in the superior left breast.  (Strong family history of breast cancer.)  A few weeks later, I had a repeat mammo, spot compression views with CAD and ultrasound.  Findings were heterogeneously dense breast tissue, architectural distortion persisting on true lateral view and spot compression.  This area is not definitely seen on the CC or spot compression view.  Sonographic evaluation demonstrated normal tissue planes with no solid or cystic mass.  Six months later (Oct.,2009), all the above was performed again with no siginificant change, same as before.  I am 67 yrs. old and prior to becoming post-menapausal, I always had fibrocystic breasts (very lumpy) but never a diagnosis of distortion. After menopause, the lumpiness was much reduced.  All I know is that after each of these recent diagnostic tests, my left breast (the one in question) really hurts.  Prior to all this testing, nothing at all.  Could this be a sign of a cyst, an inflammed lymph node or just muscular soreness from the compression?  I was uncomfortable for 3 months in May, now this Oct., I am again uncomfortable.  My breast feels sore.  Is this a bad sign?

I had a mammogram about a month ago and then got called back to do a diagnostic mammogram.  The mammogram came back saying that I had architectural distortion.  Still waiting on the diagnostic test results.  When my doctor did a break exam when I went in to get the results he said I had a small pea sized lump.  Told me not to worry until I got the results back from the diagnostic.  Is this something to worry about?  There is no breast cancer in my family?  Can this be caused by caffeine excess?

Architectual distortion can be due to several things ... it can be an indication of cancer but firbrocystic disease can also cause this as well as scar tissue. The discomfort could certainly be due to the trauma of the testing OR if there is a cystic condition this may have been irritated by the compression. I would advise you to follow whatever recommendation has been made in the future.    Regards ....
