why has my left breast enlarged? i am 53 and have tender left breast.

thank you for your information. i had a breast reduction 2 years ago and my breasts were the same size. now one has began to enlarge. it is almost 3/4 larger than the other. i have itching only, tenderness, no red marks or discoloration. i am going to schedule a mammogram as soon as possible. i don't think it is cancer. i will continue to seek medical advise as soon as i can. thank you again. Pain and swelling in the breast can indicate many things...For example hormonal fluctuation, infection as well as something more serious that requires immediate medical attention.
A breast infection, is a condition called mastitis. Mastitis occurs when the skin of the breast becomes cracked, allowing bacterial, viral or fungal microbes to enter into the breast tissue and infect the fat of the breasts. The infection leads to swelling causing irritation and pain. The majority of breast infections are caused by bacteria, and a course of antibiotic will usually clear up the infection. Over-the-counter painkillers can help control pain and inflammation.
